Cork City FC
Cork City Football Club ( ga, Cumann Peile Chathair Chorcaí) is an Irish association football club based in Cork. The club was founded and elected to the League of Ireland in 1984. It was one of the first clubs in Ireland (and the first in Cork) to field a team of professional footballers. With the progression of professionalism at the club, continued development of the Turners Cross stadium and the transition to summer football, the club became one of the biggest and best supported clubs in the country. In a survey published in 2020, the club was the highest supported League of Ireland (LOI) club. Cork City FC won its third LOI Premier Division title, and first FAI Cup double, during the 2017 season. Turners Cross (stadium)
Turners Cross is an all-seater football stadium located in and synonymous with the district of Turners Cross in Cork, Ireland. It is owned by the Munster Football Association (MFA), and is used by the MFA and by League of Ireland side Cork City. It was the first all-seated, all-covered stadium in Ireland following redevelopment in 2009, and it is currently one out of only two, the other being the Aviva Stadium. Use Cork City play their home games in the stadium. The ground also sees a large volume of matches every year under the auspices of both the MFA and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), including local, regional, national, and international matches and cup finals at schoolboy, junior, intermediate, senior, and underage international level. Derek Mountfield
Derek Mountfield (born 2 November 1962) is an English former footballer who played as a centre-back. His time at top-flight clubs Everton and subsequently Aston Villa were where he gained most fame, as Everton enjoyed successful periods at this time. Aston Villa pushed for honours during the early 1990s. Playing career Club After turning professional, Liverpool-born Mountfield spent a season-and-a-half at local club Tranmere Rovers before moving across the River Mersey to play for Everton. He signed for £30,000 prior to the 1982–83 season. He formed a defensive partnership with Kevin Ratcliffe and helped the club to victory in the 1984 FA Cup Final against Watford and to the Football League title the following season. Dave Barry (Irish Footballer)
Dave Barry (born 16 September 1961) is an Irish former sportsperson. He played Gaelic football with his local club St Finbarr's and was a member at senior level of the Cork county team from 1980 until 1991. Barry also played association football for Tramore Athletic, and played with (and managed) Cork City, making his League of Ireland debut in Cork's first ever League game on 16 September 1984. As a player, he won a league title, several national cups and played in numerous European ties for the club. When in charge, he won City's second FAI Cup and the side were also at the top end of the League of Ireland table under his stewardship. Perhaps his most famous moment is scoring the goal that put Cork City 1–0 up against giants Bayern Munich at Musgrave Park in the 1991–92 UEFA Cup. Rob Hindmarch
Robert Hindmarch (27 April 1961 – 5 November 2002) was an English footballer who played as a central defender. Club career Hindmarch made his debut for Sunderland on 14 January 1978 against Leyton Orient in a 2–2 draw at Brisbane Road. In total, he made 115 league appearances – the vast majority in the First Division – scoring two goals for the club. The defender signed for Derby County in July 1984 where he spent six seasons at the club, making 164 appearances, scoring nine goals, and helping them to two successive promotions to reach the top flight. He joined Second Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1990 for £350,000 and was appointed club captain, but spent just a single season at Molineux. Damien John Richardson (born 2 August 1947 in Dublin) is an Irish football manager and former player. His most recent job was as manager of Drogheda United. Richardson formerly managed Gillingham in England and Cobh Ramblers, Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers in Ireland. He is also known for his media work, including ''Monday Night Soccer''. Player As a player Richardson's career was divided between Shamrock Rovers and Gillingham. He made his Rovers debut in a 2–1 friendly win over Sunderland at Roker Park on 10 August 1963. Noel O'Mahony
Noel O'Mahony (18 December 1939 – 30 May 2013) was a former League of Ireland footballer and manager. As a player, he won the 1970–71 League of Ireland title with Cork Hibernians and as manager he won the 1992–93 League of Ireland Premier Division with Cork City. Family and early years O'Mahony was the son of Nora and Timothy O'Mahony and he grew up on Pearse Road in the Ballyphehane district of Cork. Two of his brothers were also League of Ireland footballers. Like Noel, Declan also played for Cork Hibernians while Pat played for Cork Celtic. Tony Allen (footballer)
Anthony Allen (27 November 1939 – 2 December 2022) was an English footballer who played most of his club career as a left-back for Stoke City between 1957 and 1970. He also made three appearances for England in 1959, before his twentieth birthday. Career Allen was born in Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent, and after playing football for his schools and the Boys' Brigade, he was signed by Stoke City as an amateur, before turning professional on his seventeenth birthday in November 1956. He instantly became a regular under Frank Taylor establishing himself at left-back with ease. Although playing outside the top division, his talents were soon spotted by the England selectors. The club's senior team competes in the League of Ireland Premier Division and it is the most successful club in the Republic of Ireland.
