Cora Martin-Moore
Cora Juanita Brewer Martin-Moore (1927–2005) was a gospel singer. She was a soloist in the Sallie Martin Singers and the director of the Echoes of Eden Choir. She also had her own music publishing company. Biography Martin-Moore was born in Chicago in 1927. In Chicago she was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Her birth parents were Lucius and Annie Moore, but she was adopted at an early age by the gospel singer, Sallie Martin. She joined the Sallie Martin Singers as a teenager, subsequently moving to Los Angeles where she became a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church and attended California State University, Dominguez Hills. She was known for her renditions of ''Eyes Hath Not Seen'' and ''He'll Wash You Whiter than Snow''. Martin-Moore wrote several songs, many were published by her own music publishing company. Gospel Music
Gospel music is a traditional genre of Christian music, and a cornerstone of Christian media. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Gospel music is characterized by dominant vocals and strong use of harmony with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion, heavily influenced by ancestral African music. Sallie Martin
Sallie Martin (November 20, 1895 – June 18, 1988) was an American gospel singer referred to as the "Mother of Gospel" for her efforts to popularize the songs of Thomas A. Dorsey and her influence on other artists. Biography Martin was born in Pittfield, Georgia, on November 20, 1895, where she was raised as a Baptist. She joined the Pentecostal movement as a young woman. She began her career singing in Holiness churches after coming to Chicago in 1927. Martin's rough-hewn singing style, combined with the enthusiastic physicality of the Holiness church, nearly kept her from working with Dorsey, who looked down on the shouting style of many Holiness singers and was reluctant to hire a singer who could not read music. Martin nonetheless persuaded Dorsey, after three auditions, to hire her as part of a trio he had formed to introduce his songs to churches. California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH, CSU Dominguez Hills, or Cal State Dominguez Hills) is a public university in Carson, California. It was founded in 1960 and is part of the California State University (CSU) system. The California African American Museum (CAAM) is a museum located in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, California, United States. The 1st century was the century spanning AD 1 ( I) through AD 100 ( C) according to the Julian calendar.
