Copa De Oro Argentina
The Copa de Oro Argentina was a Spanish football competition, held once on 23 December 1945 as a one-off game between FC Barcelona (winner of the 1944–45 La Liga) and Athletic Bilbao (winner of the 1944–45 Copa del Generalísimo), with Barcelona winning 5–4 at their Camp de Les Corts stadium. The match was organised by the Catalan Football Federation on the initiative of the Argentine consulate in Barcelona, with the trophy being provided by the city's Argentine community. It was the second super cup in Spanish football, after the one-off Copa de los Campeones de España in 1940. In 1947, the first official tournament was played, the Copa Eva Duarte which ran to 1953. José Luis Panizo
José Luis López Panizo (6 February 1922 – 14 February 1990) was a Spanish footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. During 16 seasons he played for Athletic Bilbao, appearing in 413 official matches (179 goals) and winning seven major titles. Club career Born in Sestao, Biscay, Panizo arrived at Athletic Bilbao's youth system at the age of 16 from Basque neighbours Sestao Sport Club, being almost immediately promoted to the first team. During 16 professional seasons he would play in 326 La Liga matches, scoring 136 goals (seven years in double digits); in the 1942–43 campaign, as Athletic won the double, he netted 12 in 24 games. At the age of 33, Panizo moved to another Basque club, modest SD Indautxu, closing out his career after one year. He died eight days after his 68th birthday, in Portugalete. Agustín Gaínza
Agustín Gaínza Vicandi (28 May 1922 – 6 January 1995) was a Spanish football forward and manager. Club career Nicknamed ''Piru'', Gaínza's entire career was spent with Athletic Bilbao. Born in Basauri, Biscay, he made his official debut and scored in a Biscay Championship match on 15 January 1939 against SD Erandio Club, aged 16 years, seven months and 18 days. This made him the club's second-youngest debutant (behind Domingo Acedo in 1914), a statistic which lasted until 2009 when Iker Muniain surpassed the appearance record by seven days and equalled the scoring one the following week. Gaínza made his La Liga debut on 13 October 1940 in a 1–0 away loss against Hércules CF, then proceeded to play a total of 19 seasons in the competition with the same team, amassing totals of 380 games and 119 goals. Roberto Bertol
Roberto Bertol Garrastazu (2 December 1917 – 3 March 1990) was a Spanish footballer. He was a key part of the great Athletic Bilbao team of the 1940s, where he spent 11 seasons and would eventually become its captain. Career Bertol was born in Lizarza, a small town in Gipuzkoa near the border with Navarre. His first steps as a player were with a modest hometown team. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936) had just 18 years old. Like many boys his age Bertol, was forced to fight in the war. When it ended in 1939 he played for SD Deusto (Bilbao), a team that won a national amateur championship that year. After the civil war, Athletic Bilbao was forced to rebuild their team almost from scratch, because most players who had proclaimed league champions in 1936 were now retired or in exile. Raimundo Lezama
Raimundo Pérez Lezama (29 November 1922 – 23 July 2007) was a Spanish footballer who played as a goalkeeper. After beginning his professional career in England, he returned to his country, going on to later represent, mainly, Athletic Bilbao. Club career Refugee in England Lezama was born in Barakaldo, Biscay but moved to England as a refugee at the age of 14. He entered at the port of Southampton on board the ''Habana'' on 23 May 1937, he and his brother Luis being among 3,889 Basque children fleeing the Spanish Civil War; some of the other refugees also became footballers, including Emilio Aldecoa, Sabino Barinaga and José Gallego. Josep Samitier
Josep Samitier Vilalta (; 2 February 1902 – 4 May 1972), also known as José Samitier, was a Spanish football player, manager and scout who played as a midfielder for FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, OGC Nice, the Catalan XI, and Spain. He later coached Atlético Madrid, Nice and Barcelona and worked as a scout for both Barcelona and Real Madrid. During his playing career with Barcelona, Samitier scored 187 official goals and was the club's all-time highest goalscorer at the time of his retirement. Josep Escolà Segalés (28 August 1914 – 7 March 1998), also referred to as José Escolà, was a Spanish footballer who played as a forward. He spent most of his club career at FC Barcelona. Mariano Martín
Mariano Martín Alonso (20 October 1919 – 9 September 1998) was a Spanish footballer who played as a striker. Club career Martín was born in Dueñas, Palencia. After his beginnings with Peña Font, already in Barcelona, he joined FC Barcelona in 1939, proceeding to become one of the club's most prolific scorers; during his nine seasons at Barcelona, he netted 128 times in only 150 matches, including 30 in 23 contests in his fourth season, although ''Barça'' finished in third place. In early 1944, whilst appearing in a friendly match for Catalonia, Martín suffered a severe knee ligament injury, from which he never fully recovered. However, as he played in only 29 La Liga games in his last three seasons combined, he still managed to score on 14 occasions. Martín closed out his career in 1952, after one year apiece with Gimnàstic de Tarragona and Real Zaragoza and as many with his second club, UE Sant Andreu. Mariano Gonzalvo
Mariano Gonzalvo Falcón (22 March 1922 – 7 April 2007), also referred to as Gonzalvo III or – especially as of late – by the Catalan rendition of his given name, Marià Gonzalvo, was a Spanish footballer who spent most of his career at FC Barcelona. Gonzalvo was regarded as one of the most talented midfielders in La Liga during the 1940s and early 1950s. On 7 December 1962 Barcelona played a testimonial game against C.A. Peñarol in his honour. Jaume Elías
Jaume Elías i Casas (6 November 1919 – 18 September 1977) was a Spanish footballer who played for FC Barcelona between 1943 and 1949. During his career he also played for RCD Espanyol from 1940 until 1943. Career Elías was born in Barcelona in 1919 and began his career in the youth ranks of CE Europa. In 1940 he signed a contract with RCD Espanyol and won the Spanish Cup in his first season. In the following year RCD Espanyol reached the finals again but this time they were defeated by Valencia CF. In 1943 he left for FC Barcelona and in his time at Barcelona he played in 123 league matches and anchored a defensive line with teammate José Puig Puig.
