Copa Libertadores 1976
The Copa Libertadores 1976 was the 17th edition of the Copa Libertadores, CONMEBOL's annual international club tournament. The tournament began on February 23 and ended on July 30. Cruzeiro won the competition, being the first Brazilian team, after Pelé's Santos, to win the continental competition. During the tournament, Cruzeiro suffered a great setback: the loss of the player Roberto Batata Roberto Monteiro, commonly known by the nickname Roberto Batata (July 24, 1949 – May 13, 1976), was an association football Forward (association football), forward who played for several Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Cruzeiro Esporte Clu ..., who died in a car accident. Cruzeiro Esporte Clube
Cruzeiro Esporte Clube (), known simply as Cruzeiro, is a Brazilian sports club based in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Although they compete in a number of different sports, Cruzeiro is mostly known for its association football team. It plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system, as well as in the Campeonato Mineiro, the States of Brazil, state of Minas Gerais's premier State football leagues in Brazil, state league. The club was founded on 2 January 1921, by sportsmen from the Italian colony of Belo Horizonte as ''Palestra Itália''. As a result of the Second World War, the Federal government of Brazil, Brazilian federal government banned the use of any symbols referring to the Axis powers in 1942. The club board members rebaptized the club with the name of a leading national symbol: the Crux, Cruzeiro do Sul's constellation. Club Unión Española S.A.D.P. is a professional association football, football club based in the Independencia, Chile, Independencia neighborhood, commune of Santiago, Chile. They currently participate in the Chilean Primera Division, Primera División de Chile. It has a branch of women's football, and competes in national tournaments with its lower categories. Acclaimed as one of the ''four great'' of Chilean football, it is one of the longest-lived teams in the country.
