Copa Gerdau
The Porto Alegre Junior Championships (Portuguese: Campeonato Internacional Juvenil de Tênis de Porto Alegre), also known as the Copa Gerdau, is a prestigious junior tennis tournament played on outdoor red clay courts in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The tournament is held annually in late February or early March. It is one of five Grade A tournaments, the junior equivalent of ATP Masters or WTA Premier Mandatory events in terms of rankings points allocated. History The Copa Gerdau was founded in 1984, and has hosted international players since 1987. It has been a Grade A event since 2007. Before this event was promoted to Grade A, Brazil's Banana Bowl tournament had held that distinction since 1998. Porto Alegre (, , Brazilian ; ) is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Roberto Argüello
Roberto Argüello (born 12 May 1963) is a former professional tennis player from Argentina. Career Argüello was an ambidextrous player, capable of using right-handed shots for balls to his right and left-handed stokes for balls to the left of him. He however favoured a two-handed forehand and backhand. The Argentine was the 1977 Junior Orange Bowl champion and four years later won the Under-18s Orange Bowl. In 1982, the year of the Falklands War, he left tennis in order to serve with the Argentine Army. He played just one tournament that season, the Buenos Aires Open in February. Argüello returned to the Grand Prix tennis circuit in 1983 and made an immediate impression, winning the Venice Open, as a qualifier. Gilbert Schaller (born 17 March 1969), is a former professional tennis player from Austria. Schaller achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 17 in 1995. At the 1995 French Open, Schaller upset world No. 2 Pete Sampras in the first round in a five set match. Schaller won one singles title (in Casablanca) and reached the quarterfinals of the 1996 Hamburg Masters and the 1995 Monte Carlo Masters. Patricia Tarabini (born 6 August 1968) is a former tennis player from Argentina. Franco Davín
Franco Davín (; born January 11, 1970) is a tennis coach and a former tennis player from Argentina. Davín won his first ATP-tour match at 15 years, 1 month against Hans Gildemeister in Buenos Aires. He holds the Open Era record for being the youngest player to win a tour level main draw match. Davín won three singles tournaments on the ATP Tour, and reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 30 in October 1990. He coached fellow countryman Juan Martín del Potro until July 2015, and was the captain of the Argentine Davis Cup team. Under Davín's tutelage, Del Potro won the 2009 US Open, defeating Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals and Roger Federer in the final en route to the championship. Thomas Muster (born 2 October 1967) is an Austrian former world No. 1 tennis player. One of the world's leading clay court players in the 1990s, he won the 1995 French Open and at his peak was called "The King of Clay". In addition, he won eight Masters 1000 Series titles. Silvana Campos (born 11 May 1966) is a Brazilian former professional tennis player. Biography Tennis career Born in Ribeirão Preto, Campos competed on tour in the 1980s and represented Brazil in international events, including the Olympics and Pan American Games.
