__NOTOC__ Coomalie Creek is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south-east of the territory capital of Darwin. The locality consists of land bounded to the east by the Adelaide River and whose western boundary lies the immediate west of the Stuart Highway which passes through the locality in a north–south alignment. This locality is named after Coomalie Creek, which flows through the locality, and whose name is considered to be corruption of the aboriginal name, Gumili. Its boundaries and name were gazetted on 29 October 1997. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Coomalie Creek had 20 people living within its boundaries. Coomalie Creek is located within the federal division of Lingiari, the territory electoral division of Daly and within the local government area of the Coomalie Shire. Coomalie Creek Airfield
Coomalie Creek Airfield was a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) airfield built in 1942 in what is now the locality of Coomalie Creek, Northern Territory, Australia during World War II. The airfield fell into disuse after the war ended. Since purchasing the surrounding land in 1977, private owners have restored the runway and rebuilt some wartime buildings to preserve the airfield's history. It was listed on the Northern Territory Heritage Register in 2011, along with a nearby anti-aircraft battery that was used for airfield defence. History The airfield was operated by No. 54 Operational Base Unit. The first unit to arrive was No. 31 Squadron, equipped with Bristol Beaufighters, in November 1942. The Division of Lingiari is an Australian electoral division in the Northern Territory that covers the entirety of the territory outside of the Division of Solomon, which covers Darwin and surrounding areas. The division also includes the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Lingiari includes all of the Northern Territory's remote Indigenous communities, most of whom vote when visited by mobile polling teams during the election campaign. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Adelaide River
The Adelaide River is a river in the Northern Territory of Australia. Course and features The river rises in the Litchfield National Park and flows generally northwards to Clarence Strait, joined by eight tributaries including the west branch of the Adelaide River, Coomalie Creek, Margaret River and Marrakai Creek, before discharging into its mouth in Adam Bay in the Clarence Strait. Rum Jungle, Northern Territory
Rum Jungle is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about 105 kilometres south of Darwin on the East Branch of the Finniss River. It is the site of a uranium deposit, found in 1949, which has been mined. The area derives its name from an incident when a thief stole 750 ounces of gold from miners after getting them drunk with rum. Original uranium mine George Goyder noted an unidentified copper-like green ore in 1869 at "Giants Reef", which was later "rediscovered" and identified to be torbernite. In 1949, John Michael "Jack" White discovered torbernite in old nearby copper shafts. In 1952 the Australian Government funded the setting up of a mine and treatment plant to provide uranium oxide concentrate to the UK-US Combined Development Agency under a contract which ran from 1953 to 1962.
