Cook Islands At The 2018 Commonwealth Games
The Cook Islands competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia from April 4 to April 15, 2018. The Cook Islands delegation consisted of 18 athletes (7 male and eleven female) that competed across four sports: athletics (track and field), lawn bowls, swimming and weightlifting. It was The Cook Islands's 11th appearance at the Commonwealth Games. On February 27, 2018, track and field athlete Patricia Taea was named as the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Flag Of The Cook Islands
The flag of the Cook Islands, officially known as the Cook Islands Ensign, is based on the traditional design for former British colonies in the Pacific region. It is a blue ensign containing the Union Flag in the upper left, and on the right, fifteen stars in a ring. The Union Flag is symbolic of the nation's historic ties to the United Kingdom and to the Commonwealth of Nations. The stars stand for the fifteen islands that make up the Cook Islands ( Tongareva, Rakahanga, Manihiki, Pukapuka, Nassau, Suwarrow, Palmerston, Aitutaki, Manuae, Takutea, Atiu, Mitiaro, Mauke, Rarotonga and Mangaia). The men's 800 metres at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, as part of the athletics programme, took place in the Carrara Stadium between 10 and 12 April 2018. The event was won by Wycliffe Kinyamal from Kenya as he finished ahead of the fast-finishing Kyle Langford who had come from sixth to second in the final straight. Brendan Aquilina (born 23 September 1987) is a Maltese international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Outdoors He was born in Wollongong, Australia and started bowling at the Jamberoo Bowling Club in New South Wales. He represented Malta in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He was selected as part of the Maltese team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Queensland where he reached the semi-finals of the Pairs with Shaun Parnis. Daniel Salmon (born 1994) is a Welsh international lawn and Indoor bowler. Bowls career He made his first indoor international appearance aged just 15 in 2010 becoming the youngest person to represent Wales indoors. In 2017 he reached the final of the open pairs during the 2017 World Indoor Bowls Championship with his playing partner Damian Doubler and won the 2017 World Youth Championships at Broadbeach Bowls Club on Australia’s Gold Coast. Aaron Wilson (born 24 November 1991) is an Australian international lawn bowler. Bowls career Wilson won the 2016 World Junior Championships and won the gold medal with bowls partner Brett Wilkie in the pairs at the 2016 World Outdoor Bowls Championship and won a silver medal in the fours. He won the Australian Open singles title in 2013. Wilson was selected as part of the Australian team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Queensland, where he won a gold medal in the singles.
