Coogee Surf Life Saving Club
The Coogee Surf Life Saving Club is a foundation member of the surf lifesaving movement in Australia. It was founded in 1907 by a group of concerned locals and has a proud history of no lives being lost whilst its members have patrolled. Coogee SLSC celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2007, the Year of the Lifesaver. Coogee SLSC has a history, which includes many firsts in the lifesaving movement. These include the first night surf carnival, the first mass rescue, the first shark attack and the development of the resuscitation technique. The Coogee SLSC clubhouse sits at the southern end of Coogee beach. The club's activities are managed and run by volunteers, with the assistance of a variety of community concerned sponsors, including Sydney City Renault. Nippers
Nippers are young surf lifesavers, usually aged between 5 and 14 years old, in clubs across Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Unlike senior surf lifesavers, the majority of them do not patrol the beaches. The focus for Nippers tends to be on fun, and surf awareness. Nippers learn about safety at the beach. They learn about dangers such as rocks, animals (e.g. the blue-ringed octopus), and surf conditions, such as rip currents, sandbars, and waves. Older Nippers also learn some basic first aid and may also learn CPR when they reach the age of 13. When Nippers are thirteen years old they can complete their SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate), enabling them to patrol beaches and partake in Senior Competition. Like their Senior counterparts, Nippers participate in regular competition against other Surf Lifesaving Clubs, at sports carnivals. Wylie's Baths
Wylie's Baths is a heritage-listed tidal swimming pool located near Coogee Beach, in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The baths are noted for holding the first Australian Swimming Championships and for being one of the first swimming baths for mixed gender swimming in Australia. The Baths were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 14 November 2003 and are also classified by the National Trust of Australia. Wedding Cake Island
Wedding Cake Island is an island located approximately east of Coogee Beach, Sydney, Australia in the Tasman Sea. The island protects the beach from most swells. The island is also known as Lemo's Island. Etymology The most probable source of the name is the shape of the island - it resembles a wedding cake, particularly when the white water breaks over the island, giving the appearance of 'icing'. Another theory is that bird droppings on the island gave the appearance of icing on a cake. Activities The island is a good scuba diving spot and also is the site of ANZAC day commemorations by the local surf community.
