Convicted (1950 Film)
''Convicted'' is a 1950 American crime film noir directed by Henry Levin and starring Glenn Ford and Broderick Crawford. It was the third Columbia Pictures film adaptation of the 1929 stage play ''The Criminal Code'' by Martin Flavin, following Howard Hawks's ''The Criminal Code'' (1931) and John Brahm's ''Penitentiary'' (1938). Plot This prison drama is the story of Joe Hufford (Glenn Ford), a man convicted of manslaughter. George Knowland ( Broderick Crawford) is the warden who understands Hufford, helps him adjust to prison life and recognize that he has a future after release. Hufford witnesses the murder of an informer by another convict, Malloby (Millard Mitchell), but he sticks to the prison's "silent code" and refuses to talk, even though it means he will be accused of the killing. Henry Levin (film Director)
Henry Levin (5 June 1909 – 1 May 1980) began as a stage actor and director but was most notable as an American film director of over fifty feature films. His best known credits were ''Jolson Sings Again'' (1949), ''Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959 film), Journey to the Center of the Earth'' (1959) and ''Where the Boys Are'' (1960). Biography Acting Levin began as an actor. He was on Broadway in ''Somewhere in France'' (1941) and appeared in summer stock in ''Cuckoos on the Hearth'' (1941). He worked for Brock Pemberton stage productions. Columbia Pictures Dialogue Director In May 1943 Levin signed a contract to work at Columbia Pictures. Douglas Richards Kennedy (September 14, 1915 – August 10, 1973) was an American supporting actor originally from New York City who appeared in more than 190 films between 1935 and 1973. ''Penitentiary'' is a 1938 American crime film directed by John Brahm starring Walter Connolly, John Howard, Jean Parker and Robert Barrat. John Brahm (August 17, 1893 – October 12, 1982) was a German film and television director. ''The Criminal Code'' is a 1931 American pre-Code romantic crime drama film directed by Howard Hawks and starring Walter Huston and Phillips Holmes. The screenplay, based on a 1929 play of the same name by Martin Flavin, was written by Fred Niblo Jr. and Seton I. Miller, who were nominated for Best Adaptation at the 4th Academy Awards but the award went to Howard Estabrook for Cimarron.
