Amasa Converse
Amasa Converse (August 21, 1795 – December 9, 1872) was an American Presbyterian minister and senior editor of the ''Christian Observer''. Converse performed the marriage of Edgar Allan Poe to Poe's teenage cousin, Virginia Clemm Poe. Early life Converse was born on August 21, 1795, in Lyme, New Hampshire. He attended Phillips Academy and Dartmouth College before entering Princeton Theological Seminary. Newspaper publication In 1827, Converse left his evangelical work in Virginia to become editor of the ''Richmond Visitor and Telegraph''. In 1836, he performed the marriage of Edgar Allan Poe and Virginia Clemm. "Late on the evening of May 16, Mr. Cleland, with Mrs. Clemm, Poe and Virginia, left Mrs. Yarrington's, and, walking quietly up Main street to the corner of Seventh, were married in Mr. Converse's own parlor." Charles Crozat Converse
Charles Crozat Converse (October 7, 1832 – October 18, 1918) was an American Lawyer, attorney who also worked as a composer of church songs. He is notable for setting to music the words of Joseph Scriven to become the hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Converse published an arrangement of "The Death of Minnehaha", with words by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Life Charles Crozat Converse was born in Warren, Massachusetts on October 7, 1832. He studied law and music in Leipzig, Germany, returned home in 1857, and was graduated at the Albany Law School in 1861. Many of his musical compositions appeared under the anagrammatic pen-names "C. O. Nevers", "Karl Reden", and "E. C. Revons". Connie Converse
Elizabeth Eaton Converse (born August 3, 1924, disappeared August 1974), known professionally as Connie Converse, was an American singer-songwriter and musician, active in New York City in the 1950s. Her work is among the earliest known recordings in the singer-songwriter genre of music. Converse left her family home in 1974 in search of a new life and was not heard from again. Her music was largely unknown until it was featured on a 2004 radio show. In March 2009, a compilation album of her work, ''How Sad, How Lovely'', was released. Florence Converse (1871–1967) was an American author. Biography Florence Converse was born in New Orleans in 1871. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1893 and was a member of the editorial staff of ''The Churchman'' from 1900 to 1908, when she joined the staff of the ''Atlantic Monthly''. Frank Converse (born May 22, 1938) is an American actor. Early life Converse was born in 1938 in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1962, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Frederick Shepherd Converse (January 5, 1871 – June 8, 1940), was an American composer of classical music, whose works include four operas and five symphonies. Life and career Converse was born in Newton, Massachusetts, the son of Edmund Winchester and Charlotte Augusta (Shepherd) Converse. His father was a successful merchant, and president of the National Tube Works and the Conanicut Mills. Frederick Converse's higher education was at Harvard College, where he came under the influence of the composer John K. Paine. Converse had already received instruction in piano playing, and the study of musical theory was a most important part of his college course. Harriet Maxwell Converse (née, Harriet Arnot Maxwell; Seneca clan name, Gayaneshaoh; Seneca tribal name, “Ya-ie-wa-noh, meaning ‘she watches over us.’” (11 January 1836 - 18 November 1903) was an American author of Scottish and Irish heritage. She was a folklorist, poet and historian of the Iroquois; by the late 19th century, they were a loose confederacy of six nations in New York State and Canada. She became an advocate for the rights of the Seneca and other Iroquois tribes in New York state, helping them retain their lands and preserve their culture. In recognition of her contributions, the Seneca made her a member of the tribe and gave her an honorary position as a Sachem or chief of the Six Nations. Julius Converse (December 27, 1798August 16, 1885) was the 34th governor of Vermont, from 1872 to 1874 and the 17th lieutenant governor of Vermont from 1850 to 1852. Early life and start of political career Julius Converse was born in Stafford, Connecticut, on December 27, 1798. He was raised in Vermont, educated at Vermont's Randolph Academy, studied law, and became an attorney in Bethel in 1826.
