Contemporary Arts Society
The Contemporary Arts Society was founded by John Goodwin Lyman, John Lyman in 1939 to promote modern art in Montreal, at a time when Canada was dominated by academic art. Lyman was the Society's first president. The additional officers were vice-president Paul-Émile Borduas, secretary Fritz Brandtner, and treasurer Philip Surrey. The Society lasted until 1948. Early membership Early members included Alexandre Bercovitch, Paul-Émile Borduas, Simone Mary Bouchard, Stanley Cosgrove, Louise Landry Gadbois, Eric Goldberg (artist), Eric Goldberg, Jack Humphrey, John Goodwin Lyman, Louis Muhlstock, Alfred Pellan Goodridge Roberts, Jori Smith, and Philip Surrey. John Goodwin Lyman
John Goodwin Lyman (September 29, 1886 – May 26, 1967) was an American-born Canadian modernist painter active largely in Montreal, Quebec. In the 1930s he did much to promote modern art in Canada, founding the Contemporary Art Society in 1939. Stylistically he opposed both the Group of Seven and the Canadian Group of Painters, painting in a more refined style influenced by the School of Paris. Biography Formative Years (1886–1913) Lyman was born in Biddeford, Maine. His parents were Americans who emigrated to Victoria, British Columbia. After attending the High School of Montreal and spending two years at McGill University, Lyman departed for Paris in the spring of 1907, where he studied art until the fall, when at his father's urging he returned to study architecture at the Royal College of Art. Louise Landry Gadbois
Louise Landry Gadbois (27 November 1896 – 10 August 1985) was a Canadian painter associated with the Contemporary Arts Society in Montreal. She is known for her portraiture. Biography Marie Marguerite Louise Gadbois was born in 1896 in Montreal, Quebec. She studied painting with Edwin Holgate from 1932 to 1934. Additionally she attended the Art Association of Montreal, studying under John Goodwin Lyman. In 1941 Gadbois was included in the ''Première exposition des Indépendants'' exhibition at Palais Montcalm in Quebec City. This exhibition was organized by Marie-Alain Couturier and included eleven members of the Contemporary Arts Society; Gadbois, Paul-Émile Borduas, Simone Mary Bouchard, Stanley Cosgrove, Eric Goldberg, John Goodwin Lyman, Louis Muhlstock, Alfred Pellan, Goodridge Roberts, Jori Smith, and Philip Surrey. Moe Reinblatt
Moses Reinblatt (June 20, 1917 – August 24, 1979) was a Canadian painter, printmaker, sculptor, and art teacher. He was associated with the Jewish Painters of Montreal. Biography Moe Reinblatt was born in Montreal to Jewish parents Manya (, 1925) and Joseph Reinblatt. His grandfather, Baruch, was an immigrant from Russian Bessarabia. Reinblatt studied art under Anne Savage at Baron Byng High School from 1932 to 1935, and under painter at the Montreal YM-YWHA from 1935 to 1942, working meanwhile at his father's embroidery business. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in April 1942. He was posted to RCAF Station Mont-Joli as an airframe mechanic, eventually rising to the rank of leading aircraftman. In August 1944 he was appointed an official war artist, and was sent to document the Canadian war effort in England. Jori Smith
Marjorie "Jori" Smith, (January 1, 1907 – November 25, 2005) was a key figure in the 1930s in initiating Canada's modernist art movement. She was a founding member of the Contemporary Arts Society in 1939. Biography Smith was born in Montreal, Canada on January 1, 1907. Her early training was at the Art Association of Montreal where she studied under Randolph Hewton. Subsequently, her studies took her to the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and in 1938 she became the only woman member in the Eastern Group of Painters. She was known for her landscapes and portraits of children painted in Charlevoix county in the 1930s and 1940s. She married Jean Palardy in 1930, and spent much of the following decade in the Baie Saint-Paul area with Palardy, himself a painter film-maker and antique expert. Goodridge Roberts
William Goodridge Roberts (1904–1974) was a Canadian painter known for his landscape paintings, still lifes, figure paintings and interiors. He was also a teacher. Career Goodridge Roberts was the son of poet and novelist George Edward Theodore Goodridge Roberts and Frances Seymour Allen. Roberts was born in Bridgetown, Barbados, in 1904 while his parents were on holiday from their New Brunswick home. Roberts studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and at the Art Students League of New York with John Sloan, Boardman Robinson and Max Weber (1926–1928). He moved to Ottawa in 1930, where he exhibited his work, and opened a summer school for painting in nearby Wakefield, in the Gatineau Valley. Alfred Pellan
Alfred Pellan (born Alfred Pelland; 16 May 1906 – 31 October 1988) was an important figure in twentieth-century Canadian painting. Biography Alfred Pelland was born in Quebec City on 16 May 1906. His mother, Régina Damphousse, died when he was young, and his father, Alfred Pelland, a locomotive engineer, raised their three children. In school, Pellan filled the margins of his notebooks with drawings and excelled at his art classes, with little interest in other subjects. He later changed his surname to "Pellan". In 1920, Pellan enrolled at the School of Fine Arts of Quebec. He won first prizes in advanced courses and earned medals in painting, drawing, sculpture, sketching, anatomy and advertising. He sold his first painting at the age of 17 to the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Louis Muhlstock
Louis Muhlstock, LL.D. (April 23, 1904 August 26, 2001) was a Canadian painter best known for his depictions of the Great Depression and for landscapes and urban scenes in and around Montreal. Career Born in Narajów, Galicia, Austria-Hungary, Muhlstock emigrated to Montreal in 1911. He worked as a bookkeeper during the day and at night studied art at the Council of Arts and Manufacturers, at the school of the Art Association of Montreal with William Brymner, attended Royal Canadian Academy evening classes with Maurice Cullen and others, and also at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Montreal (1922–1928).MacDonald 1979, p. 1329. Jack Humphrey
Jack Weldon Humphrey (12 January 1901 – 23 March 1967) was a Canadian landscape and figure painter, mainly in watercolour. Art historian J. Russell Harper called him the "most significant eastern Canadian painter of his generation". Biography Humphrey was born in Saint John, New Brunswick. He studied at the school of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, with Philip Hale and with Charles Webster Hawthorne at the National Academy of Design (1924-1929) and the Art Students League, New York, as well as at Charles Hawthorne's Cape Cod School of Art. He was a Tiffany Foundation student at Oyster Bay, Long Island, 1927. Eric Goldberg (artist)
Eric Goldberg (1890–1969) was a Jewish-Canadian painter, born in 1890 in Berlin, Germany. No was influenced by the art of Pierre-Auguste Renoir at an early age. He studied at Paris, France's École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, École des Beaux-Arts (1906–10) and Académie Julian under Tony Robert-Fleury, Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Jean-Paul Laurens, and taught at the Prussian Academy of Arts and, later, the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, Jerusalem (1911–1915, returning to teach again in then Mandatory Palestine, British Mandate of Palestine from 1924 to 1926). He began working in Montreal in 1928, and soon after began favouring the landscapes of Quebec's Gaspésie region as subjects. Stanley Cosgrove

Modern Art
Modern art includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the styles and philosophies of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. Modern artists experimented with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. A tendency away from the narrative, which was characteristic for the traditional arts, toward abstraction is characteristic of much modern art. Simone Mary Bouchard
Simone Mary Bouchard (1912–1945) was a Canadian painter and textile artist. She was known for her primitive style of painting. Early life Simone Mary Bouchard was born in 1912 in Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec. She began her career creating hooked rugs for the tourist trade. She became acquainted with the anthropologist Marius Barbeau, and his assistant the ethnologist/painter Jean Palardy. Subsequently, Bouchard repaired textiles for Barbeau and produced rugs for Palardy. Art career In 1937 her work was included in and exhibition of North American primitives. Barbeau and Palardy became aware of Bouchard's paintings, which were naive genre scenes. The men brought her work to the attention of other artists and collectors.
