Contemporary Art Society (Australia)
The Contemporary Art Society is an Australian organisation formed in Victoria 1938 to promote non-representative forms of art. Separate, autonomous branches were formed in each state of the Commonwealth by 1966, although not all of them still exist today. Victoria The Contemporary Art Society (now Contemporary Art Society of Victoria (Inc.) was established on 13 July 1938, by George Bell. It held its first exhibition in June 1939 at the National Gallery of Victoria, displaying works of artists from all over Australia. Members were not only committed to contemporary stylistic experimentation, but also to engagement with contemporary social realities, and in December 1942 sponsored an "Antifascist Exhibition" at Melbourne's Athenaeum Gallery. However, Bell and others left the society over differences of opinion in 1940, and further differences among remaining members (who included Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan and John Perceval), led to suspension of the society in 1947. The South Australian Society of Arts was a society for artists in South Australia, later with a royal warrant renamed The Royal South Australian Society of Arts in 1935. Ivor Francis (painter)
Ivor Pengelly Francis (13 March 1906 – 6 November 1993) was an artist and art critic and teacher in South Australia. He has been called South Australia's premier surrealist painter. Biography Ivor Francis was born in Uckfield, England and emigrated to South Australia on the ''Moreton Bay'' in 1924 as a Barwell Boys, Barwell scheme "apprentice farm boy", and went to work at Oolooloo station at Elliston, South Australia, Elliston on Eyre Peninsula. Maxwell Henley Harris AO (13 April 1921 – 13 January 1995), generally known as Max Harris, was an Australian poet, critic, columnist, commentator, publisher, and bookseller. Early life Harris was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and raised in the city of Mount Gambier, where his father was based as a travelling salesman. His early poetry was published in the children's pages of '' The Sunday Mail''. He continued to write poetry through his secondary schooling after winning a scholarship to St Peter's College, Adelaide. David Friedrich Dallwitz (25 October 1914 – 24 March 2003) was a South Australian jazz and classical musician, bandleader, composer, painter, and art teacher whose work spanned almost seven decades. He led jazz, Dixieland, and ragtime bands, and performed with classical chamber music groups. Biography Dallwitz was born in Freeling, South Australia. He studied violin as a child. After moving with his family to Adelaide in 1930, he developed an aptitude for jazz piano.
