Contemplation (short Story Collection)
''Betrachtung'' (published in English as ''Meditation'' or ''Contemplation'') is a collection of eighteen short stories by Franz Kafka written between 1904 and 1912. It was Kafka's first published book, printed at the end of 1912 (with the publication year given as "1913") in the ''Rowohlt Verlag'' on an initiative by Kurt Wolff. Eight of these stories were published before under the title ''Betrachtungen'' ("Contemplations") in the bimonthly '' Hyperion''.Kafka, Franz. ''The Complete Stories.'' A WikiProject, or Wikiproject, is a Wikimedia movement affinity group for contributors with shared goals. Malcolm Pasley
Sir John Malcolm Sabine Pasley, 5th Baronet, FBA (5 April 1926 – 4 March 2004), commonly known as Malcolm Pasley, was a British philologist affiliated with the University of Oxford. He was considered the foremost British authority of German studies. Pasley is particularly well known for his dedication to and publication of the works of Franz Kafka. Franz Kafka's Diaries, written in German language between 1910-1923, include casual observations, details of daily life, reflections on philosophical ideas, accounts of dreams, and ideas for stories. Kafka’s diaries offer a detailed view of the writer's thoughts and feelings, as well as some of his most famous and quotable statements. Kafka began keeping the diaries at the age of 27, as an attempt to provoke his stalled creativity, and kept writing in them until 1923, a year before his death. These diaries were in the background all through the composition of Kafka's major works and many of them are discussed and analyzed in detail. The diaries offer an image of a profoundly depressed man, isolated from friends and family, involved in a series of failed relationships, and constantly sick. "Description of a Struggle" (german: "Beschreibung eines Kampfes") is a short story by Franz Kafka. It contains the dialogues "Conversation with the Supplicant" ("Gespräch mit dem Beter") and "Conversation with the Drunk" ("Gespräch mit dem Betrunkenen") Origins "Description of a Struggle" is one of Kafka's earliest stories that was not destroyed and is usually the earliest included in collections of his work. ''The Complete Stories of Franz Kafka'' is a compilation of all of Franz Kafka, Kafka's short stories. With the exception of three novels (''The Trial'', ''The Castle (novel), The Castle'' and ''Amerika (Kafka novel), Amerika''), this collection includes all of his narrative work. The book was originally edited by Nahum Norbert Glatzer, Nahum N. Glatzer and published by Schocken Books in 1971. It was reprinted in 1995 with an introduction by John Updike. The collection includes all the works published during Kafka's lifetime, with the exception of ''The Stoker'' which is usually incorporated as the first chapter of his unfinished novel ''Amerika''.
