Contact Press Images
Contact Press Images is an international and independent photojournalism agency founded in 1976 in New York City by French-British journalist and editor Robert Pledge and American photojournalist David Burnett. The agency's operations have been directed by picture editor Jeffrey D. Smith since 1986. Annie Leibovitz joined Contact Press in 1977. In 1990, the agency opened its European office in Paris under the supervision of Dominique Deschavanne, a French journalist and picture editor. In addition to producing monographs and exhibitions, some of Contact's photographers have been awarded prizes in photojournalism, including honors from the World Press Photo, National Press Photographers Association, and Overseas Press Club of America. The agency is focused on human rights issues such as wars and conflicts, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, religion and ethnicity, and environmental issues. Photojournalism is journalism that uses images to tell a news story. It usually only refers to still images, but can also refer to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (such as documentary photography, social documentary photography, war photography, street photography and celebrity photography) by having a rigid ethical framework which demands an honest but impartial approach that tells a story in strictly journalistic terms. Lori Grinker
Lori Grinker (born 1957) is an American documentary art photographer and filmmaker from New York City. She is best known for her self-directed, long-term documentary projects, and has conducted these projects through photography, video and multimedia. Grinker has had two books of her work published and been exhibited internationally. Life and work Grinker studied photography at Parsons School of Design in New York City with Bernice Abbott, George Tice, and Lisette Model. While at Parsons, she conducted a photo essay on boxers who worked with boxing trainer Cus D'Amato. Although her project focused on nine-year-old pugilist Billy Hamm, she also met 13-year-old Mike Tyson during this time, and would continue to photograph him for the next ten years, including his 1988 ''Sports Illustrated'' magazine Cover. Stock photography is the supply of photographs which are often licensed for specific uses. The stock photo industry, which began to gain hold in the 1920s, has established models including traditional macrostock photography, midstock photography, and microstock photography. Conventional stock agencies charge from several hundred to several thousand US dollars per image, while microstock photography may sell for around US$25 cents. Sebastian ( pt, Sebastião I ; 20 January 1554 – 4 August 1578) was King of Portugal from 11 June 1557 to 4 August 1578 and the penultimate Portuguese monarch of the House of Aviz. Li Zhensheng (; 22 September 1940 – June 2020) was a Chinese photojournalist who captured some of the most telling images from the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, better known as the Chinese Cultural Revolution. His employment at the ''Heilongjiang Daily,'' which followed the party line, and his decision to wear a red arm band indicating an alliance with Chairman Mao Zedong, allowed him access to scenes otherwise only described in written and verbal accounts. His 2003 book ''Red-Color News Soldier'' exhibits both the revolutionary ideals and many of the atrocities that occurred during the Cultural Revolution.
