Constance Of Aragon, Queen Of Majorca
Constance of Aragon (1318–Montpellier, 1346) was Queen of Majorca as the wife of King James III. She was the eldest daughter of Alfonso IV of Aragon and his first wife, Teresa d'Entença. James III wished to have friendly relations with Aragon, and thus married Constance in Perpignan on 24 September 1336. In 1342, he refused to take the oath of fealty to Constance's brother, Peter IV of Aragon. James and Constance had two children: # James (c. 1336 – January 20, 1375), pretender to the throne of Majorca # Isabella (1337–1406), pretender to the throne of Majorca In a short war (1343–44), James (and allegedly Constance) was driven out of Majorca by Peter, who annexed the Balearic Islands to the Crown of Aragon. Two years later, Constance died in Montpellier. She was outlived by James and her two children. Maria of Navarre (french: Marie d'Évreux; 1329 – 29 April 1347) was Queen of Aragon from 1338 until her death as the first of four wives of Peter IV of Aragon. Childhood Maria was the second child of Joan II of Navarre and Philip III of Navarre, born a year after their accession. Her parents, having established the House of Évreux as the new ruling dynasty in the Kingdom of Navarre, wanted to improve relations with their Iberian neighbours. In 1333 they negotiated a betrothal between Maria's elder sister, Joan, and Peter, then heir apparent to the throne of Aragon. Peter, who ascended the throne in January 1336, expressed a preference for the second daughter, however, which forced Joan to renounce her succession rights in favour of Maria. Violante of Vilaragut (1320 or 1325 – before 1372) was a daughter of Berengeur de Vilaragut and his second wife Saura, who was an illegitimate daughter of James II of Majorca. Violante was titular queen of Majorca by her marriage to her cousin James III of Majorca. Life The marriage contract was signed on 10 November 1347 for the marriage of Violante and James. This was James' second marriage after the death of his first wife Constance of Aragon. Violante gained two stepchildren James and Isabella. Violante's brother was appointed counsellor and grand chamberlain to her husband. Violante bore her husband a daughter named Esclaramunda, who died young. James lost the kingdom in 1343 (before the marriage) and he was killed at the Battle of Llucmajor on 25 October 1349 by Peter IV of Aragon. The couple had only been married for three years.
