Constance Marie Patterson (1 April 1934 – 27 November 2021) was a British trade unionist. Margaret Prosser
Margaret Theresa Prosser, Baroness Prosser, (born 22 August 1937) is a Labour life peer and former trade unionist. Prosser was born on 22 August 1937 in Tooting, London, the daughter of Frederick James and Lillian (née Barry) Prosser. She was educated at St Boniface Primary School, Tooting and St Philomena's School, Carshalton. She studied as a mature student at North East London Polytechnic, qualifying with a Post-graduate Diploma in Advice and Information Studies in 1977. Prosser became active in the Labour party and the trades union movement in the early 1970s, rising through the ranks of the Transport and General Workers' Union (T&G) to become Deputy General Secretary in 1998. Hugh Scanlon
Hugh Parr Scanlon, Baron Scanlon (26 October 1913 – 27 January 2004) was a British trade union leader. Scanlon was born in Melbourne, to parents who had emigrated from Britain. His mother brought him back from Australia to the UK when he was two years old; she was by that time a widow. He attended Stretford Elementary School in Stretford near Manchester, which he left at the age of 11 to become an apprentice instrument maker at a local engineering firm where he first joined his union, the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU). Scanlon next worked at the Metropolitan-Vickers engineering plant at Trafford Park where he became a shop steward, before attaining the position of convener for the plant. He joined the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1937 following the events of the Spanish Civil War and made use of its networks and organising skills to rise through the union, becoming a district official in 1947. Leonard Firby Edmondson (16 December 1912 – 20 November 2006) was a British trade unionist. Born in Gateshead, Edmondson was educated at Gateshead Central School, leaving at the age of fifteen. After two years of unemployment and short-term work, he completed an apprenticeship as a fitter with the Concrete Liner Company. He joined the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU) and worked for a large number of businesses around the Tyne, generally acting as a shop steward. Cyril Thomas Howe Plant, Baron Plant, CBE (27 August 1910 – 9 August 1986) was a British trade unionist. Born in Leek, Staffordshire, he worked as a sorting clerk in the Post Office and spent a lot of time playing football, later becoming a referee. In 1934, he joined the Inland Revenue and became a founding member of the Inland Revenue Staff Federation, and was elected to its executive. In 1944, he became the union's full-time assistant secretary, then deputy secretary, before becoming its general secretary in 1960. He was elected to the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in 1964, and was its President in 1975. He was active in the International Labour Office, and served on its governing body from 1969 to 1977. Alfred Walter Henry Allen, Baron Allen of Fallowfield, CBE (7 July 1914 – 14 January 1985) was a British trade unionist and governor of the BBC. Early life Born in Bristol, he was educated at East Bristol School and worked then for the Bristol Co-operative Society until 1940, when he joined the Royal Air Force. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, Allen left the Force as a sergeant and was chosen as an area organiser of the National Union of Distributive and Allied Workers in the year thereafter. Dame Beatrice Annie Godwin DBE (6 July 1897 – 11 January 1992), known as Anne Godwin, was a British trade unionist. Early life Born in July 1897 in Farncombe, Surrey, Godwin's father was a draper. She attended school in Godalming until age 15, in 1912, when she left to start working as a counting house clerk in London's West End. In 1916, she joined the Army Pay Office as a civilian clerk, earning 16 shillings a week. Other women working at the office organised to unsuccessfully request a higher salary from the Army Paymaster. She joined the Association of Women Clerks and Secretaries (AWCS) after moving to an engineer's office in 1920. By 1928, she was a trade union organiser. Ada Maddocks (22 September 1927–7 March 2007) was a British trade union official. Born in Felixstowe, Maddocks grew up in Walthamstow and was educated at Walthamstow High School before working in a laboratory for the Co-operative Wholesale Society. She became active in the co-operative movement, then began working for the National and Local Government Officers Association in 1961. In 1976, she assumed lead responsibility for health service employees in the union, and was elected to one of two women-only seats on the General Council of the Trades Union Congress. She was awarded an OBE in 1982, and served as President of the Trades Union Congress in 1990, actively supporting the ambulance workers' strike.
