Consolidated Yachts
Consolidated Yachts is a former shipbuilder and () present-day marine service company located on City Island in The Bronx, New York City. History The company was founded as the Gas Engine and Power Company & Charles L. Seabury Company in 1896 after the merger of the Charles L. Seabury Company (founded in 1885 in Nyack, New York) and the Gas Engine & Power Company (founded about the same time in Morris Heights, Bronx). Seabury was famous for its steam yachts; the Gas Engine & Power Company's primary focus was on naptha-powered launches. Among other products, the combined company manufactured express cruisers, runabouts, yacht tenders, gas engines and alcohol ranges under the Speedway brand. The manufacturing facility in Morris Heights was referred to as the Speedway Shipyard, and it stood along Mathewson Road, near what is today the location of Roberto Clemente State Park. Charles Henry Fletcher (aka Chas. H. Fletcher in company advertising) organized and led the Centaur Company, makers of "Fletcher's Castoria", serving as president and general manager. Business career As a boy of 13, Fletcher went to work for a proprietary medicine company. In 1872 he managed to save enough to buy from a physician, Dr. Samuel Pitcher, the formula of a laxative called Castoria. With this formula, he made a fortune. Originally marketed as Pitcher's Castoria, the product has had several names, notably Fletcher's own. A little known fact is that he was sent south before the Civil War to collect debts by Demas Barnes. Harlem River
The Harlem River is an tidal strait in New York, United States, flowing between the Hudson River and the East River and separating the island of Manhattan from the Bronx on the New York mainland. The northern stretch, also called the Spuyten Duyvil ("spewing devil") Creek, has been significantly altered for navigation purposes. Originally it curved around the north of Marble Hill, but in 1895 the Harlem River Ship Canal was dug between Manhattan and Marble Hill, and in 1914 the original course was filled in. Use Harlem River Drive and Harlem River Greenway run along the west bank of the river, and the Metro-North Railroad's Hudson Line and Major Deegan Expressway on the east.
