Conquest is the act of military subjugation of an enemy by force of arms. Conquest
Conquest is the act of military subjugation of an enemy by force of arms. Military history provides many examples of conquest: the Roman conquest of Britain, the Mauryan conquest of Afghanistan and of vast areas of the Indian subcontinent, the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire and various Muslim conquests, to mention just a few. The Norman conquest of England provides an example: it built on cultural ties, led to the subjugation of the Kingdom of England to Norman control and brought William the Conqueror to the English throne in 1066. Conquest may link in some ways with colonialism. England, for example, experienced phases and areas of Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Franco-Norman colonisation and conquest. Conquest Airlines
Conquest Airlines was an American regional airline initially headquartered in Jefferson County, Texas, and later headquartered in Austin, Texas. Conquest operated primarily on routes within Texas from its hub in Austin (at the now closed Robert Mueller Municipal Airport). History Rafael Rivas and Victor Rivas, two brothers from Queens, New York City, created the concept of Conquest Airlines. The airline began in April 1988 with flights from Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas to Austin and Dallas; the airline later added Corpus Christi, McAllen, and San Antonio. In the late 1980s the airline shifted its hub and operations to Austin. Rafael Rivas, who became the executive vice president of Conquest, said that the airline chose Austin as its hub since Dallas and Houston were not centrally located in Texas. Stellantis North America (officially FCA US and formerly Chrysler ()) is one of the " Big Three" automobile manufacturers in the United States, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It is the American subsidiary of the multinational automotive company Stellantis. Houghton Conquest
Houghton Conquest is a village and civil parish located in the Central Bedfordshire district of Bedfordshire, England. The parish also includes the hamlet of How End. History Historically in the hundred of Redbornestoke, the name of the village originated from the Conquest family who held a manor and lands in the area from the 13th century to the 18th century. The Houghton in Houghton Conquest is pronounced 'how-ton', and this has been the official pronunciation since at least 1998. The Church of All Saints was constructed in the village during the 14th century, and is today the largest parish church in Bedfordshire. Features of interest include the wall paintings, sculpture, stained glass, benches and stalls. In 2018 all of the lead, weighing 21 tonnes, was stolen from the church roof. Conquest is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,796 at the 2020 census. The name was chosen to mark the victory of those who wished to form the town. Conquest is on the western border of Cayuga County and is west of Syracuse. History Conquest was part of the Central New York Military Tract. The area of the town was first settled ''circa'' 1800. The town of Conquest was formed in 1821 from the town of Cato after a contentious dispute about whether to form the new town. The town of Victory was formed at the same time and given a name to celebrate the outcome. Stuart C. Conquest (born 1 March 1967 in Ilford, England) is an English chess Grandmaster, commentator and tournament director. Chess career In 1981, at the age of 14, he won the World Youth Chess Championship in the under-16 category. Conquest was British Rapidplay Chess Champion in 1997. In 1995 and 2000 he shared first place at the Hastings Premier and in 2001, won the category 14 tournament in Clichy. Following a relatively lean period, he capped his return to form in 2008 with victory in the British Chess Championship, defeating Keith Arkell in a two-game rapidplay play-off match for the title, after they tied for first place. In May 2009 he came first at the Capo d'Orso Open. Since the mid-1990s, he has been a frequent member of the England team at the Olympiads and European Team Chess Championships. Robert Conquest
George Robert Acworth Conquest (15 July 1917 – 3 August 2015) was a British historian and poet. A long-time research fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution, Conquest was most notable for his work on the Soviet Union. His books included '' The Great Terror: Stalin's Purges of the 1930s'' (1968); '' The Harvest of Sorrow: Soviet Collectivisation and the Terror-Famine (1986)''; and '' Stalin: Breaker of Nations'' (1991). He was also the author of two novels and several collections of poetry. Norman Conquest (1916–1968) was an Australian soccer player who played as a goalkeeper. He represented Australia eleven times. Playing career Club career Conquest played for a number of teams in New South Wales, including Aberdare, Grace Brothers and North Shore. International career Conquest played eleven times for Australia between 1947 and 1950. He toured with the Australian team in South Africa. He was the Australian goalkeeper in a 1951 match between Australia and an English Football Association XI representative side at the Sydney Showground which Australia lost 17–0. John Tricker Conquest
John Tricker Conquest (1789 – 24 October 1866) was a British accoucheur (male-midwife) and physician who wrote an influential textbook on midwifery ''Outlines of Midwifery'' (1820) which went into several editions and was translated into many languages and promoted in colonial India. Conquest studied medicine at Edinburgh (MD, 1813) and was admitted LRCP in 1819. He worked as a midwife and later offered courses at his home in Aldemanbury Postern, charging 3 guineas a student. Still later moved to Finsbury Square and worked for a while as a midwifery lecturer at St. Bartholomew's Hospital but a conversion to homeopathy in 1834 led to his being asked to leave work. He also worked as physician at the City Lying-in hospital, London Female Penitentiary, the London Orphan Asylum, the Stoke Newington and Stamford Hill Dispensary.
