Connor Jones (baseball)
Connor Wesley Jones (born October 10, 1994) is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. Amateur career Jones attended Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. During his high school career he went 22–3 with a 1.68 earned run average (ERA). Jones was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 21st round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft but did not sign and attended the University of Virginia to play college baseball for the Virginia Cavaliers. Jones spent his freshman year at Virginia mostly pitching out of the bullpen. He appeared in 25 games with one start and went 4–1 with a 3.13 ERA, 40 strikeouts and one save. As a sophomore in 2015, Jones became a starter and eventually became Virginia's ace after an injury to Nathan Kirby. He started the first game of the 2015 College World Series against Vanderbilt and took the loss after giving up four runs in innings. State College Spikes
The State College Spikes are a collegiate summer baseball team of the MLB Draft League. They are located in State College, Pennsylvania, and play their home games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on the campus of Pennsylvania State University. The team was founded in 1958 in Auburn, New York, as an affiliate of the New York Yankees. Through its first two decades, the team's affiliation passed through the New York Mets, Minnesota Twins, and Philadelphia Phillies. In 1978, however, the team was left without a Major League Baseball (MLB) parent club. Auburn fielded independent teams in the New York–Penn League—with new nicknames each year—until 1980. Bullpen
In baseball, the bullpen (or simply the pen) is the area where relief pitchers warm up before entering a game. A team's roster of relief pitchers is also metonymically referred to as "the bullpen". These pitchers usually wait in the bullpen if they have not yet played in a game, rather than in the dugout with the rest of the team. The starting pitcher also makes their final pregame warm-up throws in the bullpen. Managers can call coaches in the bullpen on an in-house telephone from the dugout to tell a certain pitcher to begin their warm-up tosses. Each team generally has its own bullpen consisting of two pitching rubbers and plates at regulation distance from each other. In most Major League Baseball parks, the bullpens are situated out-of-play behind the outfield fence. The Springfield Cardinals are a Minor League Baseball team based in Springfield, Missouri. They compete as a member of the Texas League's North Division. The Cardinals began play in 2005. 2016 Major League Baseball Draft
The 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft began on June 9, 2016, to assign amateur baseball players to MLB teams. United States National Baseball Team
The United States national baseball team represents the United States in international-level baseball competitions. The team is currently ranked 5th in the world by the World Baseball Softball Confederation. Team USA won the Olympic baseball tournament in 2000, and the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in 2017. The United States was an inaugural member of the World Baseball Classic, making its debut in the first edition. The Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team is an American National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college baseball team. Nathan Kirby
Nathan Winston Kirby (born November 23, 1993) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He was drafted 40th overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2015 MLB draft, but would never play in Major League Baseball (MLB). Amateur career Kirby attended James River High School in Chesterfield County, Virginia. As a senior, he was the Virginia Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year after going 9–1 with a 1.24 ERA and 90 strikeouts in innings pitched. He declared himself ineligible for the 2012 Major League Baseball draft after electing not to fill out certain drug tests and medical forms that are required by Major League Baseball. In baseball, an ace is a starting pitcher considered the best pitcher on a team and nearly always the first pitcher in the team's starting rotation. Barring injury or exceptional circumstances, an ace typically starts on Opening Day. In addition, aces are usually preferred to start crucial playoff games, sometimes on three days' rest. The term may be a derivation of the nickname of Asa Brainard (real first name: "Asahel"), a 19th-century star pitcher, who was sometimes referred to as "Ace".
