Connacht ( ; ga, Connachta or ), is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the west of Ireland. Until the ninth century it consisted of several independent major Gaelic kingdoms (Uà Fiachrach, Uà Briúin, Uà Maine, ConmhaÃcne, and Delbhna). Between the reigns of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór (died 882) and his descendant, Aedh mac Ruaidri Ó Conchobair (reigned 1228–33), it became a kingdom under the rule of the Uà Briúin Aà dynasty, whose ruling sept adopted the surname Ua Conchobair. At its greatest extent, it incorporated the often independent Kingdom of Breifne, as well as vassalage from the lordships of western Mide and west Leinster. Two of its greatest kings, Tairrdelbach Ua Conchobair (1088–1156) and his son Ruaidri Ua Conchobair (c. 1115–1198) greatly expanded the kingdom's dominance, so much so that both became High King of Ireland. Conchobar Mac Taidg Mór
Conchobar mac Taidg Mór (died 882) was a King of Connacht from the Uà Briúin branch of the Connachta. He was the grandson of Muirgius mac Tommaltaig (died 815), a previous king. His father Tadg Mór (died 810) had been slain fighting in Muirgius' wars versus the minor tribes of Connacht. He was of the SÃl Muiredaig sept of the Uà Briúin. The Ó Conchobhair septs of Connacht are named for him. Biography The exact dates of his reign are uncertain. According to the ''Book of Leinster'' king-list he is given a reign of 27 years which would synchronise to a reign of circa 855 to 882 The death of a co-ruler Mugron mac Máele Cothaid is mentioned in 872. Delbhna
The Delbna or Delbhna were a Gaelic Irish tribe in Ireland, claiming kinship with the Dál gCais, through descent from Dealbhna son of Cas. Originally one large population, they had a number of branches in Connacht, Meath, and Munster in Ireland. Branches *The Delbhna Tir Dha Locha (of the Two Lakes), or ''Delbhna Feadha'' (of the Heather), were based in the area of County Galway between Lough Corrib and Lough Lurgan/Galway Bay. Their chiefs took the surname MacConraoi, or MacConroy, later Anglicized to King. ConmhaÃcne
The ConmhaÃcne or Conmaicne were a people of early Ireland, perhaps related to the Laigin, who dispersed to various parts of Ireland. They settled in Connacht and Longford, giving their name to several Conmaicne territories. T. F. O'Rahilly's assertion the Conmaicne were non-Goidelic is not widely accepted. Etymology Their name supposedly originates from a mythical ancestor known as ''Conmac'', descended from Fergus mac Roich and Queen Maeve of Connacht. However, Walsh stated "Conmac son of Fergus is a genealogical fiction". The word ''Conmacne'' means "progeny of Conmac" (''ne'', a progeny).
