Conlig
Conlig () is a village and townland about halfway between Bangor and Newtownards in County Down, Northern Ireland. Currently the only area on the island of Ireland that is known to have a thriving population of caiman. These small alligator like animals survive in the small lakes in the neighbouring Clandeboye estate.The aptly named Conlig caiman were believed to have been released in the mid 1980s and today survive due to the unusual ecosystem and mini climate. Mining The area includes extant ancient copper mines. Weapons forged with the copper from this mine have been found across Europe, and was traded for tin from Cornwall during the Bronze Age. Copper mining in the area declined, though the site at Whitespots in the village subsequently became one of the most important sources for minerals in the United Kingdom during the 19th century. Ian Adamson
Ian Adamson OBE (28 June 1944 – 9 January 2019) was an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician and paediatrician, who was the Lord Mayor of Belfast from 1996 to 1997. He was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Belfast from 1998 to 2003. Early life Adamson was born in 1944 in Bangor, County Down and raised in the nearby village of Conlig. Career He was an Ulster Unionist member of Belfast City Council from 1989, becoming that party's first honorary historian, until his retirement from active politics in 2011. Adamson served as Deputy Lord Mayor in 1994–95 and then Lord Mayor of Belfast in 1996–97. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1998 for services to local government. He was an MLA for Belfast East from 1998 until 2003. He was also personal physician and advisor on history and culture to Rev. Edmund Irvine Jr. (; born 10 November 1965) is a former racing driver from Northern Ireland. He competed in Formula One between 1993 and 2002, and finished runner-up in the 1999 World Drivers' Championship, driving for Scuderia Ferrari. Assisi Animal Sanctuary
Assisi Animal Sanctuary in Conlig, County Down is Northern Ireland's largest independent animal welfare charity. It shelters up to 200 companion animals at any given time. These have included dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, rabbits and guinea pigs. Several hamsters are permanent residents, and have been included in the center's animal welfare education program. History The sanctuary was founded in 1995 at the former USPCA site in Conlig. Since its formation, it has practiced a "no kill" policy. Activities The Assisi Animal Sanctuary has five main goals - providing sanctuary, finding homes for its animals, promoting animal welfare through its education program, rescuing animals at risk of death through its COAL program and fundraising to raise money to care for its animals. Bangor, County Down
Bangor ( ; ) is a city and seaside resort in County Down, Northern Ireland, on the southern side of Belfast Lough. It is within the Belfast metropolitan area and is 13 miles (22 km) east of Belfast city centre, to which it is linked by the A2 road and the Belfast–Bangor railway line. William James Pirrie
William James Pirrie, 1st Viscount Pirrie, KP, PC, PC (Ire) (31 May 1847 – 7 June 1924) was a leading British shipbuilder and businessman. He was chairman of Harland and Wolff, shipbuilders, between 1895 and 1924, and also served as Lord Mayor of Belfast between 1896 and 1898. He was ennobled as Baron Pirrie in 1906, appointed a Knight of the Order of St Patrick in 1908 and made Viscount Pirrie in 1921. In the months leading up to the 1912 disaster, Lord Pirrie was questioned about the number of life boats aboard the ''Olympic''-class ships.
