Alfred Conkling (October 12, 1789 – February 5, 1874) was a United States representative from New York, a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York and United States Minister to Mexico. Early life Conkling was born on October 12, 1789, in Amagansett, New York. He was the son of Benjamin Conkling and Esther Hand. He graduated from Union College in 1810 and read law in 1812. Career He was admitted to the bar and entered private practice in Johnstown, New York, from 1812 to 1813. He continued private practice in Canajoharie, New York, from 1813 to 1819. He was district attorney for Montgomery County, New York, from 1819 to 1821. Jon Christopher Conkling (born March 31, 1949) is an American writer. He is best known as the co-writer of the screenplay for the animated version of ''Lord of the Rings'', directed by Ralph Bakshi and produced by Saul Zaentz. He has also published articles in ''BYU Studies'', the ''Journal of Book of Mormon Studies'' and the ''Ensign'', and wrote the 1979 book ''A Joseph Smith Chronology'' and an award-winning article on Melville's "Bartleby The Scrivener." Grace Conkling
Grace Walcott Hazard Conkling (February 7, 1878 – November 15, 1958) was an American author, a poet and an English professor. Background Grace Walcott Hazard was born in New York City on February 7, 1878. She earned a bachelor of letters degree at Smith College and then taught at the Graham School in New York. Hazard moved to France to study music, but she became ill and returned to the United States. In 1905, Hazard married Roscoe Platt Conkling, and they lived on a ranch in Mexico. Conkling had two daughters, Hilda and Elsa. She died at the age of 80 on November 15, 1958. Career In 1914, Hazard taught English at Smith College where she remained till she retired in 1947. Conkling attracted wide attention as the teacher of her little daughter, Hilda Conkling, whose ''Poems by a Little Girl'' (1920) displayed great ability at an early age. Hilda Conkling
Hilda Conkling (1910–1986) was an American poet. She was the daughter of Grace Hazard Conkling, a poet in her own right and Assistant Professor of English at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. Hilda was born in New York state. Her father died when she was four years old, and she had one sister, Elsa, two years her senior. Hilda is notable for having composed most of her poetry as a young child, between the ages of four and fourteen years old. She never wrote them down herself; instead, they came out in conversation with her mother, who would write down Hilda's words either in the moment, or from memory later. If the latter, she would read the lines back to Hilda, who would then correct any deviation from her original words. As Hilda grew up, her mother stopped recording the poems, and Hilda is not known to have written any herself as an adult. Mabel Harris Conkling (November 17, 1871 – October 11, 1966) was an American sculptor, and president of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors from 1926 to 1928. Early life Mabel Viola Harris was born in Boothbay, Maine, the daughter of Charles Thomas Harris and Orissa Edna Preble Harris. After graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School, She studied art in Paris, at the Académie Julian, the Académie Vitti, the Académie Carmen, and the Académie Colarossi. Roscoe Conkling (October 30, 1829April 18, 1888) was an American lawyer and Republican Party (United States), Republican politician who represented New York (state), New York in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. He is remembered today as the leader of the Republican Stalwart (politics), Stalwart faction and a dominant figure in the Senate during the 1870s. Conkling, who was Temperance movement, temperate and detested tobacco, was known for his physical condition, maintained through regular exercise and boxing, an unusual devotion for his time.
