Congregation Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem
Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem (), also known as the Baily Shul, is an Modern Orthodox synagogue in Côte Saint-Luc, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal. It was established in 1965 with the merger of Congregations Beth David and Tifereth Jerusalem, founded in 1886 and 1904, respectively. History Congregation Beth David (), also known as the Rumanishe Shul () was founded by Romanian Jewish immigrants in 1886. It was apparently named after the father of its first president, David Elimelech Pinsler. Between 1890 and 1929 the congregation was located in the former building of Congregation Shearith Israel at 89 Chenneville Street, after which it relocated to a former church at 422 St. Joseph Boulevard. It absorbed the Galician synagogue Kehal Yeshurin in 1957 and Russian synagogue Beth Itzchak in 1959, both founded in 1904. Modern Orthodox Judaism (also Modern Orthodox or Modern Orthodoxy) is a movement within Orthodox Judaism that attempts to synthesize Jewish values and the observance of Jewish law with the secular, modern world. David Hartman (rabbi)
David Hartman ( he, דוד הרטמן; September 11, 1931 – February 10, 2013) was an American-Israeli leader and philosopher of contemporary Judaism, founder of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, Israel, and a Jewish author. Biography David Hartman was born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York. He attended Yeshiva Chaim Berlin and the Lubavitch Yeshiva, after which he spent time learning in Lakewood Yeshiva. In 1953, having studied under Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, he received his rabbinical ordination from Yeshiva University in New York. He continued his studies with Soloveitchik until 1960, while pursuing a graduate degree in philosophy with Robert C. Pollock at Fordham University. In 1971, Hartman immigrated to Israel with his wife Barbara and their five children. Hartman died on February 10, 2013 in Jerusalem at the age of 81. Yehudah Yudel Rosenberg
Yehudah Yudel Rosenberg (, ; 24 December 1860 – 23 October 1935) was a rabbi, author, and Jewish communal leader in Poland and Canada. He is best known for his Hebrew translation of the ''Zohar'', and for popularizing the tale of the Golem of Prague. Biography Rosenberg was born Judka Rozenberg on 24 December 1860 in Gębarzów, Poland (near Radom), the son of Maria Gitla () and Izrael Icek Rozenberg. He grew up in the nearby town of Skaryszew, Poland. As a young boy, he was known as "the Illui of Skaraschev". At age 17, he married Chaya Chava, the daughter of Shlomo Elimelech of Tarlow, granddaughter of the Otrovtzer Rav, Rabbi Liebish Zucker and great-grandchild of the Ostrovtzer Rebbe. After receiving his rabbinic designation, he served as rabbi in Tarlow (and thus became known in Poland as Rav Yudel Tarlow'er), Lublin, Warsaw, and Lodz.
