Conewango, New York
Conewango is a town in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 1,794 at the 2020 census. The town is named after a creek which flows through the town. The town is on the west border of the county and is northeast of Jamestown. History The name is supposed to mean "walking slowly" in the native language, related to the slow-moving creek. The area of the town was first settled ''circa'' 1816. The Town of Conewango was established in 1823 from a part of the town of Little Valley. In 1826, part of Conewango was used to form the town of Randolph, and another part was used in 1832 to make the town of Leon. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.06%, is water. The west town line is the border of Chautauqua County. Cattaraugus County (locally known as Catt County) is a county in Western New York, with one side bordering Pennsylvania. As of the United States 2020 census, the population was 77,042. The county seat is Little Valley. The county was created in 1808 and later organized in 1817. Conewango Creek
Conewango Creek is a tributary of the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania and western New York in the United States. The creek's drainage covers much of southeastern Chautauqua County, New York, and western Cattaraugus County, New York. The creek's most notable tributary is the Chadakoin River, which supplies the creek water from Chautauqua Lake. The Chautauqua Ridge, a continental divide bounds the watershed to the north and west. Course Conewango Creek begins at New Albion Lake in New Albion, New York and follows a meandering path around much of western Cattaraugus County. It joins with the Chadakoin River in Frewsburg, New York before heading southward into Pennsylvania. Conewango Creek joins the Allegheny River at the city of Warren, Pennsylvania.
