Concert For Democracy In China
The Concert for Democracy in China () was a benefit concert held in Hong Kong in support of the students involved in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. The concert was held on May 27, 1989, at the Happy Valley Racecourse on Hong Kong Island. The event lasted for 12 hours and raised over (1.5 million US dollars) for the students in Beijing. Event The event was hosted by James Wong, Phillip Chan, Eric Tsang, and John Shum. Shum stated in a later interview that all the performers enlisted voluntarily and were not invited. Sing Pao Daily News reported that the event was attended by nearly one million people, while Ta Kung Pao reported around 500,000 participants. Other estimates state the event was attended by around 200,000 people. Happy Valley Racecourse
The Happy Valley Racecourse is one of the two racecourses for horse racing and is a tourist attraction in Hong Kong. It is located in Happy Valley, Hong Kong, Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island, surrounded by Wong Nai Chung Road and Morrison Hill Road. The capacity of the venue is 55,000. History It was first built in 1845 to provide horse racing for the British people in Hong Kong. The area was previously swampland, but the only flat ground suitable for horse racing on Hong Kong Island. To make way for the racecourse, Government of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Government prohibited rice growing by villages in the surrounding area. The first race ran in December 1846. Over the years, horse racing became more and more popular among the Chinese residents. Ann Mui
Ann Mui Oi-fong (梅愛芳) (10 December 1959 – 16 April 2000) was a Hong Kong singer and actress. Background Born on 10 December 1959 in China, Mui experienced much hardship in her childhood. Her father died when she was very young and her mother raised four children alone. Like her sister Anita, Ann had a dramatic contralto singing voice, which is a rarity in Chinese pop music. Despite not being twins, both Ann and Anita's singing voices were strikingly similar, with the only way to tell them apart was the hand in which they hold the microphone. She is best remembered for her supporting roles in many movies, especially Jackie Chan's ''Police Story 2''. Ann Mui died of cervical cancer in 2000, as would Anita three years later. Zhang Lu (Chinese language, Chinese: 張露; January 21, 1932 – January 26, 2009), often written Chang Loo, was a Chinese singer and actress, known as a pioneer in Chinese pop beginning in the 1940s. Biography She was born Zhang Xiuying (张秀英) in Suzhou in 1932. Her family moved to Shanghai when she was a young child. Zhang was discovered in the mid-1940s by her neighbor, a broadcaster, who recommended her to sing at a local radio station. She started out singing covers of popular Zhou Xuan songs. Jeans are a type of pants or trousers made from denim or dungaree cloth. Bill Tung Biu () (March 30, 1933 in Hong Kong — February 22, 2006) was a Hong Kong actor and horse racing commentator. Tung started off as a jockey with his family racing horse stable. He was then recruited to become a horse racing commentator. Due to his fame, he was invited to act in many movies beginning in the late 1970s.
