Conceição (Horta)
Conceição is a ''freguesia'' ("civil parish") in the municipality of Horta in the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,138, in an area of 3.08 km². It is the second smallest parish within the administration of Horta. History The settlement of the area that became known as ''Nossa Senhora da Conceição'' was first attributed to the Flemish nobleman Joss van Aard (which was later transliterated into Portuguese as ''José da Terra'', literally ''Joseph of the Earth/Land''), where he made his home, cultivated a small parcel, and planted fruit trees on the edge of ''Ribeira dos Flamengos'' (''Ravine of the Flemings''): :''"...who settle along a ravine, today named Ribeira da Conceição, in virtue of the chapel to this invocation that he constructed..."'' Faial Island (), also known in English as Fayal, is a Portugal, Portuguese island of the Central Group (Portuguese: ''Grupo Central'') of the Azores. The Capelinhos Volcano, the westernmost point of the island, may be considered the westernmost point of Europe, if the Monchique Islet, near Flores Island (Azores), Flores Island, is considered part of North America, for it sits on the North American Plate. The Residence of Pilar ( pt, Casa do Pilar) is a Baroque-era residence, now in complete ruins, on ''Lomba do Pilar'' in the freguesia, civil parish of Conceição (Horta), Conceição, municipality of Horta (Azores), Horta, in the Portugal, Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The residence was one of the few formal ''solares'' or estate homes located on the island of Faial Island, Faial, that was abandoned, and later destroyed in a fire during the 20th century. History Pilar was the late 18th century residence of Manuel Inácio de Souza Sarmento, a rich politician in the municipal council of Horta and property-owner. The Faial-Pico Channel ( pt, Canal Faial-Pico) is an long channel that separates the islands of Faial Island, Faial and Pico Island, Pico in the central group of the archipelago of the Azores. The strait is divided into various depressions, calderas and micro-systems, referred to as ''Baixas''. The Military Battery of Espalamaca ( pt, Bateria de Costa da Ponta da Espalamaca), also known as the ''Position of Espalamaca'' ( pt, Posição da Espalamaca) or the ''Fort of Espalamaca'' ( pt, Forte da Espalamaca), is located over the promontory of Espalamaca, civil parish of Conceição, municipality of Horta, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Flamengos is a Portuguese civil parish ( pt, freguesia) on the island of Faial in the archipelago of the Azores. Its name was derived from the grouping of Flemish settlers who made their homes in this landlocked valley, in the municipality of Horta. The population in 2011 was 1,604, in an area of 14.62 km². Angústias
Angústias is one of the three ''freguesia'' ("civil parish") that comprise the urban area of the city of Horta, on the island of Faial in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. This is an economically active, densely populated area. The population in 2011 was 2,418, in an area of 3.79 km2. Due to its commercial nature, the parish is one of the island's primary destinations for tourism, due to the concentration of historical sights and shopping. 1926 Horta Earthquake
The 1926 Horta earthquake ( pt, Sismo da Horta de 1926/Terramoto da Horta), occurred at 8:42 a.m. (local time) on 31 August. It caused the destruction of many of the buildings located in the city of Horta, the central group of the Portuguese autonomous region of the Azores, resulting in the death of nine and the partial or complete destruction of 4,138 buildings.
