Conaing Mac Amalgado
Conaing mac Amalgado (died 742) was a King of Brega from the Uí Chonaing sept of Cnogba (Knowth) of the Síl nÁedo Sláine branch of the southern Ui Neill. He was the son of Amalgaid mac Congalaig (died 718), a previous king. He ruled from 728 to 742. The Síl nÁedo Sláine were involved in infighting in this period with rivalry between the Uí Chonaing sept and the Uí Chernaig sept of South Brega. Conaing's father Amalgaid had been slain in the Battle of Cenannas (near Kells) versus Conall Grant mac Cernaig (died 718) of the rival sept. The annals record the killing of Cathal mac Néill of the Uí Chernaig in 729 but do not mention the circumstances. In 737 the Battle of Lía Ailbe in Mag nAilbe (Moynalvy, Co. Meath) was fought between the two septs, Conaing was victorious and Cathal mac Áeda and Cernach mac Fogartaig of the rival sept were defeated with Cathal slain. Cathal Mac Áeda
Cathal mac Áeda (before 722–737) was a king in southern Brega of the Uí Chernaig sept of Lagore of the Síl nÁedo Sláine. He was the son of Áed Laigin mac Néill (died 722) and great-great grandson of the high king Diarmait mac Áedo Sláine (died 665). His father was slain at the Battle of Allen in the great defeat of the Ui Neill by the men of Leinster. He was chief of the Uí Chernaig from 729 to 737. An isolated reference in the ''Annals of Ulster'' for the year 733 has 'the overthrow of Cathal by Domnall in Tailtiu, and the overthrow of Fallomun by Cathal in Tlachtga'. The consensus view among historians is that the Cathal mentioned was Cathal mac Finguine (died 742), King of Munster. However, the historian Charles-Edwards argues in favor of Cathal mac Áeda. He cites the lack of mention of this event in the Munster oriented ''Annals of Innisfallen''. Diarmait Mac Conaing
Diarmait mac Conaing (died 786) was a King of Brega from the Uí Chonaing sept of Cnogba (Knowth) of the Síl nÁedo Sláine branch of the southern Ui Neill. He was the son of Conaing mac Amalgado (died 742) and brother of Congalach mac Conaing (died 778), previous kings. He ruled from 778 to 786. The high king Donnchad Midi (died 797) had campaigned against Leinster in 780 and then made peace. The next year in 781 the Battle of the Rig was fought between the Síl nÁedo Sláine and the Uí Garrchon branch of the Laigin and their king Cú Chongalt was slain. Donnchad had subdued Brega in 778 and the annals do not mention whether this campaign versus the Uí Garrchon was part of Donnchad's campaign or an act of defiance by the men of Brega or simply a border warfare with no connection. Congalach Mac Conaing
Congalach mac Conaing (died 778) was a King of Brega from the Uí Chonaing sept of Cnogba (Knowth) of the Síl nÁedo Sláine branch of the southern Ui Neill. He was the son of Conaing mac Amalgado (died 742), a previous king. He is listed as the successor to his uncle Dúngal mac Amalgado (died 759) in a poem in the ''Book of Leinster''; it appears that this was just to leadership of the Uí Chonaing who were called kings of Ciannachta at this time. The annals mention Coirpre mac Fogartaig (died 771), of the rival Uí Chernaig sept of Lagore in south Brega, as King of Brega. Congalach would have ruled all Brega from 771 to 778. The Ciannachta are mentioned as having participated in the expedition of the high king Donnchad Midi (died 797) against Leinster. Áed Allán
Áed Allán (or Áed mac Fergaile) (died 743) was an 8th-century Irish king of Ailech and High King of Ireland. Áed Allán was the son of Fergal mac Máele Dúin and a member of the Cenél nEógain, a branch of the Northern Uí Néill. Fergal was killed, along with many others, at the battle of Almain, in 722. This battle had been fought against Murchad mac Brain of the Uí Dúnlainge, the king of Leinster. The king of the Northern Uí Néill at this time was Flaithbertach mac Loingsig of the Cenél Conaill. Áed Allán faced Flaithbertach in battle at Mag Itha in 734, and was defeated. Nonetheless, Flaithbertach abdicated or was deposed shortly after and joined the monastery at Ard Macha (Armagh). Cernach mac Fogartaig (died 738) was a king in southern Brega of the Uí Chernaig sept of Lagore of the Síl nÁedo Sláine branch of the southern Ui Neill. He was the son of the high king Fogartach mac Néill (died 724). He appears as a leader of the Uí Chernaig in the years 737-738. The Uí Chernaig sept had a feud with the Uí Chonaing sept of Cnogba (Knowth) in North Brega going back to the assassination of Cernach's grandfather Niall mac Cernaig Sotal (died 701) by Írgalach mac Conaing (died 702).
