TV/COM International
TV/COM International is a company that developed the Compression NetWORKS digital broadcasting system that evolved into the current DVB-S standard for digital satellite broadcasting. It was used by the short-lived AlphaStar satellite platform for content delivery and conditional access. TV/COM was formed from the former Oak Communications in San Diego to develop its Compression NetWORKS system. The company was bought by Hyundai in 1994 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai. The company was eventually closed and its intellectual property sold to Irdeto in The Netherlands. Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite (DVB-S) is the original DVB standard for Satellite Television and dates from 1995, in its first release, while development lasted from 1993 to 1997. MPEG2
MPEG-2 (a.k.a. H.222/H.262 as was defined by the ITU) is a standard for "the generic coding of moving pictures and associated audio information". It describes a combination of lossy video compression and lossy audio data compression methods, which permit storage and transmission of movies using currently available storage media and transmission bandwidth.
