The Communist Party of Armenia ( hy, Հայաստանի կոմունիստական կուսակցություն, russian: Коммунистическая партия Армении) was a branch of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union within the Armenian SSR, and as such, the sole ruling party in the Armenian SSR. History The first Marxist group in Armenia was founded by Stepan Shaumian in 1899 in Jalaloghli (modern-day Stepanavan). In 1902, Shaumian, Bogdan Knunyants and Arshak Zurabov founded the Union of Armenian Social Democrats was founded in 1902 in Tiflis (Tbilisi) as a branch of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. Like its parent organization, it split into a Bolshevik and Menshevik faction. The Armenian Communist Party ( hy, Հայաստանի կոմունիստական կուսակցություն, ՀԿԿ; ''Hayastani Komunistakan Kusaktsutyun'', HKK) is a communist party in Armenia. It considers itself the successor to the Armenian branch of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. It is the main communist party in Armenia and claimed 18,000 (mostly elderly) members in 2006. HKK publishes ''Hayastani Komunist'' and ''Pravda Armenii''. It should not be confused with the historical Communist Party of Armenia during the Soviet era, nor the Democratic Party of Armenia, a party founded by the last secretary of the Communist Party of Armenia, Aram G. The Marxist Party of Armenia ( hy, Հայաստանի մարքսիստական կուսակցություն, ''Hayastani Marksistakan Kusaktsutiun'') was a political party in Armenia. History Prior to the 2003 Armenian parliamentary election, the party formed part of the Free and Fair Armenia electoral alliance together with the Union of Communists of Armenia party. However, the bloc was denied registration on the grounds that neither of the two parties had submitted proper registration. The Marxist Party of Armenia had registered in 1997, but failed to get re-register by 1 January 2003. As such, neither of the two parties could participate in the 2003 elections. On 7 July 2003, the party had officially merged with the United Communist Party of Armenia. Renewed Communist Party of Armenia (in Armenian language, Armenian: ''Hayastani Noratsvats Komunistakan Kusaktsutyun'') was a political party in Armenia. HNKK was formed on May 25, 2002, by former Armenian Communist Party (HKK) leaders Yuri Manukian and Grant Voskanyan who had been expelled from HKK the previous year on the grounds that they had advocated cooperation with the government. Manukian became the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the party. HNKK published ''Khosq Bazmatc''. HNKK supported Robert Kocharyan in the 2003 presidential elections. In the May 2003 parliamentary elections HNKK launched 40 candidates. The party got 6200 votes (0.53%). The electoral slogan of the party was "Motherland. Work. Socialism.". On July 7 the same year, HNKK merged into the United Communist Party of Armenia.
