Communication Complexity
In theoretical computer science, communication complexity studies the amount of communication required to solve a problem when the input to the problem is distributed among two or more parties. The study of communication complexity was first introduced by Andrew Yao in 1979, while studying the problem of computation distributed among several machines. The problem is usually stated as follows: two parties (traditionally called Alice and Bob) each receive a (potentially different) n-bit string x and y. The ''goal'' is for Alice to compute the value of a certain function, f(x, y), that depends on both x and y, with the least amount of communication between them. While Alice and Bob can always succeed by having Bob send his whole n-bit string to Alice (who then computes the function f), the idea here is to find clever ways of calculating ''f'' with fewer than n bits of communication. Hoeffding's Inequality
In probability theory, Hoeffding's inequality provides an upper bound on the probability that the sum of bounded independent random variables deviates from its expected value by more than a certain amount. Hoeffding's inequality was proven by Wassily Hoeffding in 1963. Hoeffding's inequality is a special case of the Azuma–Hoeffding inequality and McDiarmid's inequality. It is similar to the Chernoff bound, but tends to be less sharp, in particular when the variance of the random variables is small. Communication
Communication (from la, communicare, meaning "to share" or "to be in relation with") is usually defined as the transmission of information. The term may also refer to the message communicated through such transmissions or the field of inquiry studying them. There are many disagreements about its precise definition. Ran Raz
Ran Raz ( he, רָן רָז) is a computer scientist who works in the area of computational complexity theory. He was a professor in the faculty of mathematics and computer science at the Weizmann Institute. He is now a professor of computer science at Princeton University. Ran Raz received his Ph.D. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1992 under Avi Wigderson and Michael Ben-Or. Ran Raz is well known for his work on interactive proof systems. His two most-cited papers are on multi-prover interactive proofs and on probabilistically checkable proofs. Ran Raz received the Erdős Prize in 2002. His work has been awarded in the top conferences in theoretical computer science. Gap-Hamming Problem
In communication complexity, the gap-Hamming problem asks, if Alice and Bob are each given a (potentially different) string, what is the minimal number of bits that they need to exchange in order for Alice to approximately compute the Hamming distance between their strings. The solution to the problem roughly states that, if Alice and Bob are each given a string, then any communication protocol used to compute the Hamming distance between their strings does (asymptotically) no better than Bob sending his whole string to Alice. More specifically, if Alice and Bob are each given n-bit strings, there exists no communication protocol that lets Alice compute the hamming distance between their strings to within \pm\sqrt using less than \Omega(n) bits. Space–time Tradeoff
A space–time trade-off or time–memory trade-off in computer science is a case where an algorithm or program trades increased space usage with decreased time. Here, ''space'' refers to the data storage consumed in performing a given task (RAM, HDD, etc), and ''time'' refers to the time consumed in performing a given task ( computation time or response time). The utility of a given space–time tradeoff is affected by related fixed and variable costs (of, e.g., CPU speed, storage space), and is subject to diminishing returns. Streaming Algorithms
In computer science, streaming algorithms are algorithms for processing data streams in which the input is presented as a sequence of items and can be examined in only a few passes (typically just one). In most models, these algorithms have access to limited memory (generally logarithmic in the size of and/or the maximum value in the stream). They may also have limited processing time per item. These constraints may mean that an algorithm produces an approximate answer based on a summary or "sketch" of the data stream. Decision Tree Complexity
In computational complexity the decision tree model is the model of computation in which an algorithm is considered to be basically a decision tree, i.e., a sequence of ''queries'' or ''tests'' that are done adaptively, so the outcome of the previous tests can influence the test is performed next. Typically, these tests have a small number of outcomes (such as a yes–no question) and can be performed quickly (say, with unit computational cost), so the worst-case time complexity of an algorithm in the decision tree model corresponds to the depth of the corresponding decision tree. In linear algebra, the nonnegative rank of a nonnegative matrix is a concept similar to the usual linear rank of a real matrix, but adding the requirement that certain coefficients and entries of vectors/matrices have to be nonnegative. In quantum computing, a qubit () or quantum bit is a basic unit of quantum information—the quantum version of the classic binary bit physically realized with a two-state device. A qubit is a two-state (or two-level) quantum-mechanical system, one of the simplest quantum systems displaying the peculiarity of quantum mechanics.
