Lillers
Lillers (; vls, Lillaar) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography A small farming and light industrial town situated some 15 km northwest of Béthune and 40 km west of Lille, at the junction of the D185, D182 and the D69 roads. The town is bypassed by the N43 to the north and the A26 autoroute to the south. The river Clarence flows through the town. History After being owned by the Counts of Flanders, Lillers, which had been fortified against the Normans was given as a dowry in 1179 to King Philip II Augustus of France. In 1327, Artois was created a county by Louis IX. His brother Robert became the first Count. In 1303, the city of Lillers was looted by the Flemings. In 1340, King Edward III of England claimed the throne of France and started the Hundred Years War, marked by two famous battles, that of Crécy 1346 and that of Battle of Agincourt, 1415, where Robert Wavrin, Lord of Lillers, met his death. Ecquedecques (; vls, Eskeldeke) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography A farming village some southwest of Béthune and southwest of Lille, at the junction of the D185 and the D185E roads. The A26 autoroute passes by just a few yards from the commune. Saint-Venant ( vls, Papingem) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department (administrative division) in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography Saint-Venant is situated some northwest of Béthune and west of Lille, at the junction of the D186 and D916 roads and by the banks of the Lys. Saint-Floris ( vls, Sint-Floris) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography Saint-Floris is a small farming village situated some north of Béthune and west of Lille, on the D186 road. The canalized river Lys flows through the commune, forming part of the border with the department of Nord. Robecq
Robecq (; nl, Robeke) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography Robecq is situated about northwest of Béthune and southwest of Lille. The Canal d’Aire and the rivers Clarence and Busnes all flow through the commune. History During World War I intense action took place close to Robecq. In his posthumously published memoir, Private A S Bullock recalls the fighting at Bacquerolles Farm, noting that the German attack was repelled 'chiefly by my Lewis gun!'. Norrent-Fontes
Norrent-Fontes (; vls, Norrem) is a Communes of France, commune in the Pas-de-Calais Departments of France, department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography Norrent-Fontes is situated some northwest of Béthune and west of Lille, at the junction of the D94 and D91 roads. The A26 autoroute passes through the commune. History Known to the Ancient Rome, Romans as ''Norremum'', later as ''Norrem'', in 1211 and then ''Norrenc'' in 1240. The hamlet of Fontes was known as ''Adfondenis'' in 654. After the French Revolution, the commune was created from the village of Norrent and the three hamlets of Fontes, Goulay and Malznoi. Between the two world wars, the commune was home to one of the biggest military airfields in northern France. Abandoned in 1940, the site was reused by the Germans to launch V-1 flying bomb, V1 missiles towards London, in 1944. The remains are still visible from the Rely, Pas-de-Calais, Rely road.
