Communal Democracy Party
The Communal Democracy Party ( tr, Toplumcu Demokrasi Partisi, TDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The party came into being in May 2007 as a merger of the Peace and Democracy Movement with the Communal Liberation Party. At the 2009 legislative elections for the Assembly of the Republic in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the TDP, in its first elections, won 2 out of 50 seats and 6.87% of the popular vote. In 2013, it took part in the interim Siber cabinet with three ministers. At the 2013 legislative elections, the party increased its share of the vote to 7.41% and its number of MPs to 3. The TDP currently holds the mayorship of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality with Mehmet Harmancı. Mine Atlı
Mine Atlı is Turkish Cypriot politician and lawyer. She was a member of the Turkish Municipality of Nicosia's Municipal Parliament. She was elected as the chairman of the (TDP) Communal Democracy Party in the first extraordinary congress, filling the seat of Cemal Özyiğit who had resigned. Mine Atlı is the incumbent leader of the TDP. As a feminist activist Mine Atli, as a member of the former Gender Advisory Team (GAT) contributed to a policy brief and report including recommendations on Implementing UNSCR 1325 Provisions on Women, Peace and Security in 2012. Assembly Of The Republic (Northern Cyprus)
The Assembly of the Republic ( tr, Cumhuriyet Meclisi) is the parliament of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It has 50 members, elected for a five-year term by mitigated proportional representation. A party must cross the electoral threshold (5% of the total vote) to be awarded any seats. The parliament is composed of 50 MPs, chosen from six electoral districts, which are coterminous with the districts of Northern Cyprus: Lefkoşa, Gazimağusa, Girne, Güzelyurt, Lefke and İskele. In Northern Cyprus parliamentary elections, voters vote for individual candidates. There are two ways of voting. * Voters can vote for a party, which in effect is voting for every MP candidate from that party in that district once. 2022 Northern Cypriot Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Northern Cyprus on 23 January 2022. Going into the election, the government was led by Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu of the National Unity Party (UBP). The Sucuoğlu cabinet, was formed in November 2021 and was a minority coalition government of the National Unity Party (UBP) and the Democratic Party (DP). It functioned as a caretaker government until the snap election. The National Unity Party won 24 seats, gaining three compared to the previous elections in 2018. The main opposition party, the Republican Turkish Party won 18 seats, gaining six. Three other parties won seats; the Democratic Party and the People's Party both won three seats, while the Rebirth Party won two. The Communal Democracy Party lost all the seats it held. People's Party (Northern Cyprus)
The People's Party ( tr, Halkın Partisi, HP) is a political party in Northern Cyprus, founded on 6 January 2016. The party has stated its aims as erasing the old political system based on corruption, and the good administration of Northern Cyprus. Its leader is Kudret Özersay and its secretary general is Ahmet Tokatlıoğlu. It first gained representation in the parliament in the 2018 elections. The party has a different organization from all other political parties in Northern Cyprus. It has no women's or youth wings, with the stated aim of directly integrating women and youth into its administration. It has no system of delegates that represent local branches of the party and there are no heads of local branches. It prohibits members of the parliament who have switched or are switching parties, or those who have served as leader or secretary general in another party from joining it. Republican Turkish Party
The Republican Turkish Party ( tr, Cumhuriyetçi Türk Partisi, CTP) is a social-democratic political party in Northern Cyprus. The party was founded in 1970 by Ahmet Mithat Berberoğlu, a lawyer, in opposition to the leadership of Fazıl Küçük and Rauf Denktaş. On 30 June 2008, the Republican Turkish Party became a consultative member of the Socialist International (voted in by all members except the Greek Cypriot Movement for Social Democracy). It became a full member of the organization in 2014. Policies and ideology The CTP is a social democratic political party, positioned on the centre-left on the political spectrum. 2018 Northern Cypriot Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Northern Cyprus on 7 January 2018 to elect the 50 members of the Assembly of the Republic for a five-year term. Going into the elections, the government was led by Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün, who had served since 16 April 2016, leading a coalition consisting of the National Unity Party and the Democratic Party. Mustafa Akıncı
Mustafa Akıncı (; born 28 December 1947) is a Turkish Cypriot politician who was the president of Northern Cyprus from April 2015 until October 2020. An architect by profession, Akıncı in 1976 became the first elected mayor of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality in Northern Cyprus, at the age of 28. He defeated a candidate endorsed by President Rauf Denktaş as the candidate of the Communal Liberation Party (TKP). He held this position for an uninterrupted term of 14 years until 1990, leading several projects for the city that won him international awards including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and collaborating with his Greek Cypriot counterpart. Communal Liberation Party New Forces
Communal Liberation Party New Forces ( tr, Toplumcu Kurtuluş Partisi Yeni Güçler, TKP-YG) is a centre-left political party in Northern Cyprus. It is led by Mehmet Çakıcı. It was founded in 2016 after a group headed by Çakıcı broke off from the Communal Democracy Party (TDP). Çakıcı and former MP Mustafa Emiroğluları resigned from the TDP on 25 November 2016. This was followed by the resignation of 70 other members of the TDP, mostly originating from the historical Communal Liberation Party (TKP), on 28 November 2016. The rationale given for these resignations was what they saw as "undemocratic" policies employed by the TDP leadership under Cemal Özyiğit and "the restriction of the freedom of speech within the party" after an election for the head of the Güzelyurt District. Mehmet Harmancı
Mehmet Harmancı, (born 1977) is the current mayor of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality, the local government of the Turkish Cypriot capital North Nicosia. He was born in Nicosia. He studied international relations in the Eastern Mediterranean University and completed his master's degree on the EU in John Moores University in Liverpool. He began his political life in the youth wing of the Communal Liberation Party and after its merger with the BDH, continued in the Communal Democracy Party. He worked as a director in a tourism agency between 2005 and 2008.
