Commonwealth Connections is a greenway (landscape), greenway and conservation ethic, conservation initiative co-developed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (Massachusetts), Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the National Park Service, and over fifty trail and land conservation agencies and non-profit organizations. Bay Circuit
The Bay Circuit Trail and Greenway or Bay Circuit is a Massachusetts rail trail and greenway connecting the outlying suburbs of Boston from Plum Island in Newburyport to Kingston Bay in Duxbury, a distance of . Ashuwillticook Rail Trail
The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail is a rail trail built on a former railroad corridor that runs parallel to Route 8 through the towns of Cheshire, Lanesborough and Adams, and into the city of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. It is a multi-use trail for biking, walking, roller-blading, and jogging. The trail is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Its first two phases opened in 2001 and 2004, with a 1.2-mile northerly extension added in 2017. A extension, which runs South from the old Berkshire Mall to Crane Ave, opened in the spring of 2022. The southern end of the trail begins at Crane Ave, off of Route 8 in Pittsfield, and travels north to the center of Adams. Mahican-Mohawk Trail
The Mahican-Mohawk Trail is a long-distance hiking trail that is under construction. Originally a trail used by Native Americans, the Mahican-Mohawk Trail faded away as the automobile became popular and subsequently, the Mohawk Trail was constructed. In 1992, after some research by Williams College students, volunteers started to reclaim the trail. There are currently multiple sections open in western Massachusetts, including one that follows the old New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad grade.
