Commodore Decatur Airport is a closed airport located 2 miles west-northwest of Bainbridge, Georgia, United States. History Built by the United States Army Air Forces around 1943, during World War II, the airport was used as an auxiliary training airfield for the Army pilot school at Bainbridge Army Airfield Bainbridge Air Base is a closed United States Air Force base. It was inactivated on 31 March 1961. History Following entry of the United States into World War II, the Chief of the Army Air Corps directed the Air Corps Flying Training Command .... With the end of the war, it was turned over to the city of Donalsonville and developed into a municipal airport. It was closed around 1995. Today, the closed airport is used every year for a Bikefest. Motorcycle clubs from all over the southeast show up for a week; they race on the strip and camp out. Bainbridge, Georgia
Bainbridge is a city in Decatur County, Georgia, Decatur County, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, United States. The city is the county seat of Decatur County. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the city had a population of 14,468. History The first European settlement in what is today Bainbridge was a trading post set up by James Burges in the late 18th century. From him comes the name Burges's Bluff. The town was named after U.S. Navy Commodore William Bainbridge, commander of the USS Constitution, USS ''Constitution'' ("Old Ironsides"), and was incorporated on December 22, 1829. In 1824, Bainbridge was designated seat of the newly formed Decatur County. On October 10, 2018, Bainbridge was victim to Hurricane Michael. The storm left widespread damage through the city limits, including downed trees, power lines, and structural damage. Many residents affected suffered severe damage to their homes. Bainbridge Army Airfield
Bainbridge Air Base is a closed United States Air Force base. It was inactivated on 31 March 1961. History Following entry of the United States into World War II, the Chief of the Army Air Corps directed the Air Corps Flying Training Command Southeast Training Center to immediately take action to select air base sites needed to increase its pilot training rate to meet anticipated wartime demands. A level area near Bainbridge, seven miles (11 km) northwest of the City adjacent to the Seaboard Air Line Railroad was selected by the Air Corps, and the City of Bainbridge and Decatur County purchased for $66,800 and then leased the property to the Army for $1 per annum for a basic flight training base authorizing 89.9 million for its construction. The contractor broke ground on 3 April 1942, for Bainbridge Army Airfield. Georgia World War II Army Airfields
During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) established numerous airfields in Georgia for antisubmarine defense in the Gulf of Mexico and for training pilots and aircrews of USAAF fighters and bombers. Most of these airfields were under the command of Third Air Force or the Army Air Forces Training Command (AAFTC) However the other USAAF support commands ( Air Technical Service Command (ATSC); Air Transport Command (ATC) or Troop Carrier Command) commanded a significant number of airfields in a support roles. It is still possible to find remnants of these wartime airfields. Many were converted into municipal airports, some were returned to agriculture and several were retained as United States Air Force installations and were front-line bases during the Cold War. Hundreds of the temporary buildings that were used survive today, and are being used for other purposes.
