Comet is a commercial programming language designed by at-the-time Brown University professor Dr. Pascal Van Hentenryck and used to solve complex combinatorial optimization problems in areas such as resource allocation and scheduling. In mathematical optimization and decision theory, a loss function or cost function (sometimes also called an error function) is a function that maps an event or values of one or more variables onto a real number intuitively representing some "cost" associated with the event. An optimization problem seeks to minimize a loss function. Interrupt
In digital computers, an interrupt (sometimes referred to as a trap) is a request for the processor to ''interrupt'' currently executing code (when permitted), so that the event can be processed in a timely manner. If the request is accepted, the processor will suspend its current activities, save its state, and execute a function called an ''interrupt handler'' (or an ''interrupt service routine'', ISR) to deal with the event. Loop Scheduling
In parallel computing, loop scheduling is the problem of assigning proper iterations of parallelizable loops among ''n'' processors to achieve load balancing and maintain data locality with minimum dispatch overhead. Typical loop scheduling methods are: * static even scheduling: evenly divide loop iteration space into n chunks and assign each chunk to a processor * dynamic scheduling: a chunk of loop iteration is dispatched at runtime by an idle processor. Local Search (constraint Satisfaction)
In constraint satisfaction, local search is an incomplete method for finding a solution to a problem. It is based on iteratively improving an assignment of the variables until all constraints are satisfied. In particular, local search algorithms typically modify the value of a variable in an assignment at each step. The new assignment is close to the previous one in the space of assignment, hence the name ''local search''. All local search algorithms use a function that evaluates the quality of assignment, for example the number of constraints violated by the assignment.
