Lincoln Goodale
Lincoln Goodale (February 25, 1782–1868) was the first doctor to live in Columbus, Ohio, United States. He was a great benefactor to the city and his legacy includes a large parcel of land that today is known as Goodale Park. His likeness in the form of a large bronze bust watches over the park. Biography Lincoln Goodale was born on February 25, 1782, in Worcester, Massachusetts and was a member of the first landing party in Marietta, Ohio. As a child, his father Major Nathan Goodale was killed by Native Americans during a ransom attempt and he was raised by his mother. He later received medical training from Dr. Leonard Jewett. He volunteered for the War of 1812, and served as an assistant surgeon in General Duncan MacArthur's regiment. During the war, he was held at Fort Malden in Canada. Goodale Park
Goodale Park is a public park in the Victorian Village area of Columbus, Ohio. It was donated to the city in 1851 by Lincoln Goodale. For a few months during the American Civil War, Civil War, it was a staging area for Union troops known as Camp Jackson. ComFest, a large, free, multi-day, non-corporate, music and arts annual festival, is held in the park in June. Located immediately north of downtown Columbus, the park is bordered by Goodale Street on the South, Park Street on the East, Buttles Avenue on the North, and Dennison Avenue on the West. Schiller Park is a municipal park located in German Village, a historic neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. The park is bounded by Reinhard Avenue to the north, Jaeger Street to the east, East Deshler Avenue to the south, and City Park Avenue to the west. Description and history During the nineteenth century, the land was originally owned by Francis Stewart and was known as "Stewart's Grove." It had been the area's center for festivals and neighborhood activities since the 1800s, including the Independence Day celebration of 1830 and Ohio State Fairs of 1864 and 1865. By 1866, David W. Deshler, his son William G. Deshler, and Allen G. Thurman purchased the property with the aim of having it permanently serve the public. German Village
German Village is a historic neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio, just south of the city's downtown. It was settled in the early-to-mid-19th century by a large number of German immigrants, who at one time comprised as much as a third of the city's entire population. Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a botanical garden and conservatory located in Columbus, Ohio. It is open daily and an admission fee is charged. Today, it is a horticultural and educational institution showcasing exotic plant collections, special exhibitions, and Dale Chihuly artworks. The conservatory contains more than 400 plant species. Biomes representing global climate zones include: Himalayan Mountains, Tropical Rainforest, Desert, and Pacific Island Water Garden. The Columbus Park of Roses, also known as the Whetstone Park of Roses, is a public park and rose garden in Columbus, Ohio. Melvin B. Dodge (1924August 19, 1991) was director of the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department and president of the Greater Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau. Biography In 1951, Dodge graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in education. Shortly after graduation, he was hired by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department to oversee Sunshine Park. The Olentangy River is a tributary of the Scioto River in Ohio, United States. History It was originally called ''keenhongsheconsepung'', a Delaware word literally translated as "sharp tool river", based on the shale found along its shores.
