Columbus Painter
The Columbus Painter was an ancient Corinthian vase painter in the black-figure style; his real name is unknown. He was active during the transitional period between orientalising vase painting and black-figure proper (''c''. 640–625 BC). He was a pupil of the Painter of Palermo 489 and, in turn, the teacher of the Chimaira Painter and thus a major influence on the Chimaira Group dominated by the latter. Black-figure Vase Painting
Black-figure pottery painting, also known as the black-figure style or black-figure ceramic ( grc, , }), is one of the styles of painting on antique Greek vases. It was especially common between the 7th and 5th centuries BCE, although there are specimens dating as late as the 2nd century BCE. Stylistically it can be distinguished from the preceding orientalizing period and the subsequent red-figure pottery style. Figures and ornaments were painted on the body of the vessel using shapes and colors reminiscent of silhouettes. Delicate contours were incised into the paint before firing, and details could be reinforced and highlighted with opaque colors, usually white and red. The principal centers for this style were initially the commercial hub Corinth, and later Athens. Painter Of Palermo 489
The Painter of Palermo 489 was an ancient Corinthian vase painter in the black-figure style; his real name is unknown. He was active during the transitional period between orientalising vase painting and black-figure proper (''ca''. 640–625 BC). He is known especially as the teacher of the Columbus Painter and thus a major indirect influence on several further Early Corinthian artists, such as the Chimaira Painter and the Chimaira Group. Darrell A. Amyx describes him as "the Columbus Painter's great teacher" and a "powerful and accomplished painter". He painted mostly ''aryballoi''. Chimaira () is an American heavy metal band from Cleveland, Ohio. Formed in August 1998, the group was a member of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal scene. The band's name is derived from the word Chimera, a monstrous creature in Greek mythology. Throughout its history, the band had numerous line-up changes, leaving vocalist Mark Hunter as the only constant member. The band dissolved in 2014, but announced a one-off reunion in late 2017 wherein most of the group's longtime members rejoined. History Early days (1998–1999) Prior to Chimaira, vocalist Mark Hunter and bassist Jim LaMarca were part of a previous band known as Skipline, which lasted 2 years from 1996 to 1998. Shortly before Skipline's first ever Rhode Island show, the group were carjacked of their van (along with all of the inside equipment), which left the 4-piece band to find their way back to Ohio and effectively ended Skipline. Aryballos
An aryballos (Greek: ἀρύβαλλος; plural aryballoi) was a small spherical or globular flask with a narrow neck used in Ancient Greece."aryballos" in ''The New Encyclopædia Britannica''. Chicago: Encyclopædia Britannica Inc., 15th edn., 1992, Vol. 1, p. 611. It was used to contain perfume or oil, and is often depicted in vase paintings being used by athletes during bathing. In these depictions, the vessel is at times attached by a strap to the athlete's wrist, or hung by a strap from a peg on the wall. The shape of the aryballos originally came from the oinochoe of the Geometric period of the 9th century BCE, a globe-shaped wine jar. By the Proto-Corinthian period of the following century, it had attained its definitive shape, going from spherical to ovoid to conical, and finally back to spherical. 7th-century BC Greek People
The 7th century is the period from 601 ( DCI) through 700 ( DCC) in accordance with the Julian calendar in the Common Era. The spread of Islam and the Muslim conquests began with the unification of Arabia by Muhammad starting in 622. After Muhammad's death in 632, Islam expanded beyond the Arabian Peninsula under the Rashidun Caliphate (632–661) and the Umayyad Caliphate (661–750).
