Columbia Eneutseak
Columbia Eneutseak (January 16, 1893 – August 16, 1959), also billed as Nancy Columbia and Nancy Eneutseak, was an American performer in silent films, known for writing and starring in ''The Way of the Eskimo'' (1911). Early life Nancy Helena Columbia Palmer was born at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, the daughter of Esther Eneutseak. Her family were Inuit, from Labrador, part of the "Eskimo Village" ethnographic exhibit at the exposition. She was named by Bertha Honore Palmer, a white socialite and head of the exposition's Board of Lady Managers. Eneutseak was a child when she appeared in similar exhibits at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta in 1895, and the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York in 1901, and in traveling shows with the Barnum & Bailey and Ringling circus companies, and at Coney Island. Esther Eneutseak
Esther Eneutseak (1877–1961) was an Inuk performer and actor. Originally from Nain, Labrador, she performed at "Inuit villages" at world's fairs and circuses, and in films with her daughter, Columbia Eneutseak. Her self-chosen surname means "good person". World's Columbian Exposition (1892–1896) In 1892, Eneutseak and her parents, Helena and Abile, were part of a group of 60 Inuit from Labrador who had been recruited to appear in an ethnological exposition at the Chicago World's Fair. Three months before the fair officially opened, Eneutseak, who was 15-years old and pregnant, gave birth to a daughter in Chicago. The child was named Nancy Helena Columbia Palmer after her grandmothers, the official name of the fair (the Columbian Exposition), and for socialite Bertha Palmer, whom fair organizers had asked to be the child's godmother. Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition
The Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition, acronym AYP or AYPE, was a world's fair held in Seattle in 1909 publicizing the development of the Pacific Northwest. It was originally planned for 1907 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush, but the organizers learned of the Jamestown Exposition being held that same year and rescheduled. The fairgrounds became the campus of the University of Washington. Planning Godfrey Chealander proposed the idea for the fair. Chealander was then Grand Secretary of the Arctic Brotherhood, was involved in the Alaska Territory exhibit at the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland, Oregon. Originally, he pitched William Sheffield of the Alaska Club and James A. Wood, city editor of the ''Seattle Times'' on the idea of a permanent exhibit in Seattle about Alaska. The Panama–Pacific International Exposition was a world's fair held in San Francisco, California, United States, from February 20 to December 4, 1915. Its stated purpose was to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, but it was widely seen in the city as an opportunity to showcase its recovery from the 1906 earthquake. ''The Last of the Mohicans'' is a 1920 American Western silent film written by Robert A. Dillon, adapted from James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 novel of the same name. Clarence Brown and Maurice Tourneur co-directed the film. (Brown took over the direction of the film after Tourneur injured himself in a fall.) It is a story of two English sisters meeting danger on the frontier of the American colonies, in and around the fort commanded by their father. The adventure film stars Wallace Beery, Barbara Bedford, Lillian Hall, Alan Roscoe and Boris Karloff in one of his earliest silent film roles (playing an Indian brave). Barbara Bedford later married her co-star in the film, Alan Roscoe in real life. The production was shot near Big Bear Lake and in Yosemite Valley.
