Columbia Climate School
The Columbia Climate School is Columbia University's school of trans-disciplinary Climatology, climate research. Announced in July 2020, the Climate School is the first new school to be established at the university in 25 years. As of January 2021, the school has announced one degree program, a Master of Arts in Climate and Society. Since 2021, the Columbia Climate School has been the official university partner of The Climate Group for Climate Week NYC annually. Columbia University
Columbia University (also known as Columbia, and officially as Columbia University in the City of New York) is a private research university in New York City. Established in 1754 as King's College on the grounds of Trinity Church in Manhattan, Columbia is the oldest institution of higher education in New York and the fifth-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Alexander Halliday
Sir Alexander Norman Halliday (born 11 August 1952) is a British geochemist, an academic who is the Founding Dean of the Columbia Climate School, and Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. He joined the Earth Institute in April 2018, after spending more than a decade at the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford, during which time he was dean of science and engineering. He is also a professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University. Early life Halliday comes from Penzance, Cornwall, in the UK. Jason Bordoff
Jason Eric Bordoff (born 1972/1973) is an American energy policy expert, and a researcher specializing in the intersection of economics, energy, environment, and national security. In April 2021, he was named a Co-Founding Dean of the Columbia Climate School. Since 2013 he has served as the founding director of the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, where he is also a professor of professional practice. From 2009 to 2013 he served in senior roles in the Obama administration on the Council on Environmental Quality, the National Economic Council, and the National Security Council. Ruth DeFries
Ruth S. DeFries (born October 20, 1956) is an environmental geographer who specializes in the use of remote sensing to study Earth's habitability under the influence of human activities, such as deforestation, that influence regulating biophysical and biogeochemical processes. She was one of 24 recipients of the 2007 MacArthur Fellowship, and was elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences in 2006. Life DeFries received her Ph.D. in 1980 from the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and her B.A. in Earth Science in 1976 from Washington University. Maureen Raymo
Maureen E. "Mo" Raymo (born 1959) is an American paleoclimatologist and marine geologist. She is the Co-Founding Dean of the Columbia Climate School, Director of the Lamont–Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, the G. Unger Vetlesen Professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences, and Director of the Lamont–Doherty Core Repository at the Lamont–Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. She is the first female climate scientist and first female scientist to head the institution. Raymo has done pioneering work on ice ages, the geologic temperature record, and climate, examining and theorizing about global cooling and warming and transitions in ice age cycles. Climatology
Climatology (from Greek , ''klima'', "place, zone"; and , ''-logia'') or climate science is the scientific study of Earth's climate, typically defined as weather conditions averaged over a period of at least 30 years. This modern field of study is regarded as a branch of the atmospheric sciences and a subfield of physical geography, which is one of the Earth sciences. Climatology now includes aspects of oceanography and biogeochemistry. The main methods employed by climatologists are the analysis of observations and modelling of the physical processes that determine the climate. The main topics of research are the study of climate variability, mechanisms of climate changes and modern climate change. The Climate Group is a non-profit organisation that works with businesses and government leaders around the world to address climate change. The Group has programmes focusing on renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Launched in 2004, the organisation operates globally with offices in the UK (headquarters), the United States and India. Climate Week NYC
Climate Week NYC is an event that has taken place every year in New York City since 2009. The summit takes place alongside the UN General Assembly and brings together international leaders from business, government and civil society to showcase global climate action.
