The Gallorette Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares age three and older over a distance of miles (8.5 furlongs) on the turf, run annually on Preakness Day at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The race is part of a series of stakes races named for famous Marylanders, in this case: Gallorette, one of the great racing fillies in American history. Named for Mrs. M. A. Opening Verse (1986–2002) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in England and the United States. Background Bred in Kentucky, his sire was the 1977 Epsom and Irish Derby winner, The Minstrel. Out of the mare Shy Dawn, his damsire was Grey Dawn, the French Champion Two-Year-Old Colt who beat Sea Bird II in the 1964 Grand Critérium at Longchamp Racecourse. The Flower Bowl Stakes is a Grade II American thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares aged four years old and older over a distance of miles on the turf held annually in early September at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. History It had originally been run at Belmont Park from its inception in 1978 until 2020. The race is part of the Breeders Cup Challenge series. All Along Stakes
The All Along Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in September at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. Open to fillies and mares, age three and older, it is raced on turf at a distance of miles. The race currently offers a purse of $150,000. In 2015, the Maryland Jockey Club agreed to move the Stakes race and run it at Laurel Park changing the name of a former race Lady Baltimore Stakes to the All Along Stakes. The race is named for the great French racing mare, All Along. Owned by Daniel Wildenstein, she raced in Europe and North America. All Along was the 1983 Champion Older Mare in France and 1983 American Horse of the Year who was inducted in the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 1990. Breeders' Cup Mile
The Breeders' Cup Mile is a Grade 1 Weight for Age stakes race for thoroughbred racehorses three years old and up, run on a grass course. It has been conducted annually as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships since the event's inception in 1984. All Breeders' Cups to date have been held in the United States except for the 1996 event in Canada. The purse was raised from $1.5 million US to $2 million in 2007. Freddy Head has won this race twice as a jockey and three times as a trainer. Belmont Park is a major thoroughbred horse racing facility in the northeastern United States, located in Elmont, New York, just east of the New York City limits. It was opened on May 4, 1905. It is operated by the non-profit New York Racing Association, as are the Aqueduct Racetrack and Saratoga Race Course. Churchill Downs is a horse racing complex located on Central Avenue in south Louisville, Kentucky, United States, famed for hosting the annual Kentucky Derby. Graded Stakes Race
A graded stakes race is a thoroughbred horse race in the United States that meets the criteria of the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). A specific grade level (I, II, III or listed) is then assigned to the race, based on statistical analysis of the quality of the field in previous years, provided the race meets the minimum purse criteria for the grade in question. In Canada, a similar grading system is maintained by the Jockey Club of Canada. Graded stakes races are similar to Group races in Europe but the grading is more dynamic in North America. The grading system was designed in 1973 and first published in 1974.
