Colmcille GFC
Colmcille Gaelic Football Club is a Gaelic football and ladies' Gaelic football club based in Aughnacliffe, County Longford, Ireland. History Colmcille GFC is named for Saint Colmcille (or Saint Columba) (AD 521–597) who founded Inchmore monastery on nearby Lough Gowna. The club won the very first Longford Senior Football Championship in 1890. They have won six more county senior titles since then, the latest in 2022. Colmcille was one of the first five ladies' Gaelic football teams in Longford, first playing in 1980. They play at Fr. Phil McGee Park in Aghacordrinan, south of Aughnacliffe. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Ladies' Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach na mBan) is a women's team sport. It is the women's equivalent of Gaelic football. Ladies' football is organised by the Ladies' Gaelic Football Association. Two teams of 15 players kick or hand-pass a round ball towards goals at each end of a grass pitch, since May 2022 women Gaelic footballers have to wear shin pads. The sport is mainly played in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, where the two main competitions are the All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship and the Ladies' National Football League. Both competitions feature teams representing the traditional Gaelic games counties. The 2017 All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship Final was the best attended women's sports final of 2017. Aughnacliffe
Aughnacliffe, officially Aghnacliff (), is a village in County Longford, Ireland. It is located close to Lough Gowna and the border with County Cavan. The village, and the townland in which it is located, take their name from the Aughnacliffe Dolmen, a portal tomb which is located nearby. Columba or Colmcille; gd, Calum Cille; gv, Colum Keeilley; non, Kolban or at least partly reinterpreted as (7 December 521 – 9 June 597 AD) was an Irish abbot and missionary evangelist credited with spreading Christianity in what is today Scotland at the start of the Hiberno-Scottish mission. Lough Gowna
Lough Gowna () is a fresh water lake which is the uppermost lake on the River Erne. It is located on the border between County Longford and County Cavan, with the largest part of the lake being in County Longford. Lough Gowna is a moraine-dammed lake formed at the end of the last glaciation, and owes its complex indented shape to the underlying drumlin landscape. This results in a large number of bays and inlets on the lake, often connected by narrow channels. The river Erne enters the system in a western direction into the easternmost part of the lake (locally known as ''Derries Lough'') and exits northward through County Cavan. However, the damming caused by the moraines that gave rise to the lake result in large bodies of water to the north-west and south-west which form the bulk of the area of the lake. The Longford Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition organised by Longford GAA among the Senior grade Gaelic football clubs in County Longford, Ireland. Eugene McGee (Gaelic Football Manager)
Eugene McGee (16 November 1941 – 5 May 2019) was an Irish Gaelic footballer, manager, trainer, selector, Gaelic games administrator and journalist, who is best known for his time as manager of the Offaly senior football team. McGee guided the Offaly team to success in the 1980, 1981, and 1982 Leinster Senior Football Championship, and to the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship title. McGee was in charge of Ireland when they toured Australia for the 1990 International Rules Series. He was also in charge for the 1987 International Rules Series and Seán McCague was his assistant manager on both occasions. In 2004, McGee was intermediary in a dispute between Offaly's International Rules Series player Ciaran McManus and the Offaly County Board when McManus questioned the selection of a new manager.
