College of the Redwoods (CR) is a public community college with its main campus in Eureka, California. It is part of the California Community Colleges System and serves three counties and has two branch campuses, as well as three additional sites. It's one only one of twelve community colleges in California that offer on campus housing for students. History The original Redwoods Community College District was formed in 1964 by a vote of the people of Humboldt County. Founding President Eugene J. Portugal and his wife Dottie Portugal shaped the look of the campus. In 1975, residents of the coastal portion of Mendocino County voted to join the District, and in 1978 Del Norte County similarly joined. The college serves these areas, as well as a portion of Trinity County. In 2012, CR's regional accreditor Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) placed the college on "Show Cause" status, warning the college that its accreditation might be withdrawn. Ashley Eriksmoen
Ashley Eriksmoen is a California-born Australia-based furniture maker, woodworker, artist, and educator. Early life and education Eriksmoen was born in raised in southern California. Eriksmoen attended Boston College, receiving a BS in Geology in 1992. She took a year off during undergraduate to study art at the Istituto Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence, Italy. Eriksmoen studied at the College of the Redwoods (now the Krenov School) from 1997 to 1998, receiving a Certificate of Fine Woodworking. She went on to receive a Masters in Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 2000. Career Artist Eriksmoen uses salvaged urban waste such as tables and chairs to create complex interwoven sculptures. Humboldt Botanical Garden
The Humboldt Botanical Gardens is a 44.5 acres (18 ha) botanical garden located south of Eureka, California, United States. The Gardens are near the South Bay portion of Humboldt Bay on the north side of the College of the Redwoods. Grading and site preparation for the Gardens began in August 2003. The garden opened in 2006, with more development completed by 2008. The Humboldt Botanical Gardens offices are located in downtown Eureka and are operated by the nonprofit Humboldt Botanical Garden Foundation which had over 1000 members in 2020. The Gardens were first organized in 1991. The area's climate, which straddles Mediterranean and Pacific Marine allows for a diverse group of plants. The Rarámuri or Tarahumara is a group of indigenous people of the Americas living in the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. They are renowned for their long-distance running ability.
