Colin Oates (born 7 June 1983 in Harold Wood, London) is an English former Judoka. Judo career In 2011, Oates won a bronze medal in the 2011 European Championship defeating Pierre Duprat from France and finished fifth in the 2011 World Championship, losing to Musa Mogushkov from Russia in the bronze medal match. Securing qualification to his first Olympic Games in London. Oates competed for Team GB in the 2012 London Olympics in the men's 66 kg judo event. After victories over Australia's Ivo dos Santos and former World Champion Khashbaataryn Tsagaanbaatar Oates was beaten in the quarter finals by the eventual gold medallist, Lasha Shavdatuashvili from Georgia, being pinned for 15 seconds during "golden score" overtime. Repechage (; french: repêchage, "fishing out, rescuing") is a practice in series competitions that allows participants who failed to meet qualifying standards by a small margin to continue to the next round. A well known example is the wild card system. Types Different types of repechage can occur. Shavdatuashvili is one of the most successful judoka of the early 21st century, having won Olympic medals at the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics as well as a dozen medals on the IJF World Tour. Khashbaataryn Tsagaanbaatar ( mn, Хашбаатарын Цагаанбаатар) is the single medal winner from Mongolia at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He won a bronze medal in judo. He became the first Mongolian to win the gold medal at the World Judo Championships in Rotterdam in 2009. Tsagaanbaatar is also the older brother of LSU quarterback Naimanzuunnadintsetseg Tsagaanbaatar. He also took gold medal in the 2006 Asian Games. Team GB
Team GB is the brand name used since 1999 by the British Olympic Association (BOA) for their British Olympic team. The brand was developed after the nation's poor performance in the 1996 Summer Olympics, and is now a trademark of the BOA. It is meant to unify the team as one body, irrespective of each member athlete's particular sport.
