Colfax, Texas
Colfax is an unincorporated populated place in Van Zandt County, Texas, United States. It is located within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and had a population of 35 in 2000. History The settlement was originally named "Cold Water" and began as a log house that was used for religious services. An early settler, Elisha Tunnell, erected a church at that location known as "Tunnell's Chapel". The settlement was renamed "Colfax" in honor of United States Vice President Schuyler Colfax. The Colfax post office was located at the settlement in 1870 and remained in operation until 1905, after which mail was delivered from Canton. The donated land had also been the location of two local churches that hosted Methodist and Cumberland Presbyterian congregations in 1885. The location was also the site of revivals and summer camp meetings. Colfax had a population of 30 between 1885 to 1895 and grew to around 100 in the 1930s. Grand Saline is a city in Van Zandt County, Texas, United States, located in East Texas. The population was 3,136 as of 2010. Grand Saline is the third largest city in Van Zandt County and is located roughly 75 miles (120 km) east of Dallas and 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Tyler, the two nearest metropolitan areas, and is part of the greater Tyler/Longview area. Canton is a city in and the county seat of Van Zandt County in East Texas, United States. It is located about 40 miles west of Tyler. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 4,229. The city sustained severe damage on April 29, 2017, from several tornadoes, and two years later from another tornado that struck downtown on May 29, 2019, both of which occurred just before First Monday Trade Days, the popular flea market extravaganza which draws thousands to the city each month. The Neches River () begins in Van Zandt County west of Rhine Lake and flows for through the piney woods of east Texas, defining the boundaries of 14 counties on its way to its mouth on Sabine Lake near the Rainbow Bridge. Two major reservoirs, Lake Palestine and B. A. Steinhagen Reservoir are located on the Neches.
