Coles County Memorial Airport
Coles County Memorial Airport is between Mattoon and Charleston in Coles County, Illinois. Owned by the Coles County Airport Authority, it is five miles east of Mattoon and six miles west of Charleston. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 called it a ''general aviation'' facility. Airline flights (Ozark DC-3s) started in 1955; Ozark left in 1980. American Eagle flew to Chicago's O'Hare until 1991. Midway Connections also flew to Midway International in Chicago. Airline service ended in 2000 when Great Lakes Airlines, which operated flights to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport through the Purdue University Airport, left the airport. The service was under the United Express name. The airport hosts an air show featuring aerial performances and static display as well as helicopter and monster truck rides. Mattoon ( ) is a city in Coles County, Illinois, United States. The population was 16,870 as of the 2020 census. The city is home to Lake Land College and has close ties with its neighbor, Charleston. Both are principal cities of the Charleston–Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area. Mattoon station is an Amtrak intercity train station in Mattoon, Illinois, United States. The station is a flag stop on the ''City of New Orleans'' route, served only when passengers have tickets to and from the station. It is a regular stop for the . History The Mattoon station is housed in the former Illinois Central Railroad Depot. The depot was completed in 1918 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. At its height, the building housed a power plant, mail room, luggage room, and restaurant, in addition to the main hall where passengers waited to board trains. Coles County Zipline
Coles County Zipline is a provider of mass transportation in Coles County, Illinois, with deviated fixed-routes serving Charleston and Mattoon. As of 2020, the system provided 18,863 rides over 2,688 annual vehicle revenue hours. The service is a division of Dial-a-Ride Rural Public Transportation, which also provides demand-response service to Coles and Douglas Counties. History Public transit in Mattoon has existed since at least 1905, when the Mattoon City Railway Co. provided the city with streetcar service. This was complemented by interurban service from Mattoon to Charleston, which lasted from 1904 to 1927. In 1927, both the interurban and streetcar systems were dismantled, with streetcars in Mattoon being replaced by buses.
