Coldstream Football Club
Coldstream Football & Netball Club, nicknamed the Cougars, is an Australian rules football team. It is based in the Yarra Valley of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and is part of the Eastern Football League. History Founded in 1890 in the town of Coldstream, the club had an erratic existence until it started regularly competing in the Croydon-Ferntree Gully FL in the mid 1950s. It reformed in 1952 in the Yarra Valley competition before transferring to the Croydon-Ferntree Gully FL in 1956. It became one of the founding clubs of the Eastern District Football League in 1962. The club had to wait until 1975 to achieve their first premiership in Division 3. They again were successful in 1986 and 1990. Their last premiership was in 4th division in 2001. The Eastern Football Netball League (known previously as the Eastern Districts Football League and later the Eastern Football League) is an Australian rules football league, based in the eastern suburbs of metropolitan Melbourne. History The Eastern Districts Football League was established on 15 February 1962, but its origins can be traced back to the Reporter District Football League established in 1903. From 1927 until World War 2, the league was known as the Ringwood District Football League. It was known as the Croydon District Football League and the Croydon Mail Football League between World War 2 and 1949. In 1950 the league became known as the Croydon-Ferntree Gully League. In 1997, the Eastern District Football League and the Knox Junior Football Association united to create the Eastern Football League. Coldstream, Victoria
Coldstream is a locality and township within Greater Melbourne beyond the Melbourne metropolitan area Urban Growth Boundary, 36 km north-east from Melbourne's central business district, located within the Shire of Yarra Ranges local government area. Coldstream recorded a population of 2,199 at the 2021 census. History The township developed around the railway station after the railway arrived in 1888, the Post Office opening on 7 February 1889. Prior to that the locality was known as "The Lodge". In 1909, Dame Nellie Melba bought Coombe Cottage at Coldstream. The house is located at the junction of Maroondah Highway and Melba Highway (named in her honour). It became the home of Melba's granddaughter, Lady Pamela Vestey, until her death in 2011. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). Jeff Hopgood
Jeff Hopgood (14 January 1948 – 8 November 2006) was an Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Hopgood spent six season at North Melbourne without ever managing to cement his spot, although he did manage 16 games in 1972. After leaving North Melbourne, Hopgood played at Coburg and was a ruckman in their 1974 VFA premiership side. He later became influential in the Cairns sporting scene, serving as the president of AFL Cairns and the inaugural chairman of the Cairns Taipans basketball team, of which he was a co-founder. Jason Baldwin
The West Memphis Three are three men convicted as teenagers in 1994 of the 1993 murders of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas, United States. Damien Echols was sentenced to death, Jessie Misskelley Jr. to life imprisonment plus two 20-year sentences, and Jason Baldwin to life imprisonment. During the trial, the prosecution asserted that the juveniles killed the children as part of a Satanic ritual. Due to the dubious nature of the evidence as well as the suspected presence of emotional bias in court, the case generated widespread controversy and was the subject of several documentaries. Daniel Hargraves
Daniel Hargraves (born 6 December 1975) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle in the Australian Football League. He was originally drafted by the Bulldogs from the Eastern Under 18 side in the Under 18 Victorian Metropolitan Football League with selection 27 in the 1994 AFL pre-season draft. After playing 38 games over four seasons, he was traded to Fremantle in return for selection 18, which was used by the Bulldogs to draft Mark Alvey. Hargraves would play only three games for Fremantle in two seasons before being delisted at the end of the 1999 season. He then moved to South Australia to play for North Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) where he won the Ken Farmer Medal in 2002 as the SANFL's leading goal kicker with 68 goals. Lindsay Gilbee
Lindsay Gilbee (born 8 July 1981) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Western Bulldogs in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was selected by the Bulldogs in the 3rd round of the 1999 National AFL Draft with pick 43 after playing for the Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup. He retired after the 2012 season. Gilbee currently serves as a development coach at the St Kilda Football Club. Known as one of the best kicks in the AFL, Gilbee rejected offers to trial in the United States to become an American football punter. Guy Richards
Guy Richards (born 21 March 1983) is an Australian rules footballer in the Australian Football League. From Coldstream, Richards was drafted in the 2000 National Draft to Collingwood, but took until 2004 to make his AFL debut. Continually developed into a good tap ruckman, Richards was forced to miss his early seasons as a football through injuries, mainly knee injuries hampered his start. When making his debut, he took time to become a dominant player but showed what he could, giving him 12 games since debut, before once again outed with a groin injury. It did not stop him from winning the best first year player however, 2005 was like the early years, a knee and then hip injury, nothing went right. He was able to make a return for the final two games, playing to his full capability. Bayley Fritsch (born 6 December 1996) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). A forward, tall and weighing , Fritsch has the ability to play as both a high marking and small crumbing forward. Considered a late bloomer, he missed out on selection with the Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup as a junior.
