Colchester United Ladies Football Club was an English ladies football team based in Colchester, Essex, and affiliated to Colchester United FC. In 2013, the club folded. History The club was founded in 1992 under the name of Colchester Royals. In 1998, it became affiliated to Colchester United FC. The club won the 2006–07 South East Combination Women's Football League winning promotion to the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division, the second tier of English women's football. The club folded in 2013 and no longer competes in any football league. Colchester United Football in the Community released plans to reform the Women's team in time for the 2023/24 season. Wivenhoe
Wivenhoe ( ) is a town and civil parish in north-eastern Essex, England, approximately south-east of Colchester. Historically Wivenhoe village, on the banks of the River Colne, and Wivenhoe Cross, on the higher ground to the north, were two separate settlements; however, with considerable development in the 19th century, the two have since merged. At the 2011 census, the town had a population of 7,637, compared with 7,221 in 2001. The town's history centres on fishing, ship building and smuggling. Much of lower Wivenhoe is also a designated conservation area, with many streets being of particular architectural interest. Etymology The place-name ''Wivenhoe'' is Saxon in origin, deriving from the personal name ''Wifa's'' or ''Wife's'' spur or promontory (hoe). Colchester ( ) is a city in Essex, in the East of England. It had a population of 122,000 in 2011. The demonym is Colcestrian. Colchester occupies the site of Camulodunum, the first major city in Roman Britain and its first capital. Colchester therefore claims to be Britain's first city. It has been an important military base since the Roman era, with Colchester Garrison currently housing the 16th Air Assault Brigade. Situated on the River Colne, Colchester is northeast of London. The FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division is a league in the third level in the women's football pyramid in England, along with the FA Women's National League North, Northern division. These two divisions are part of the FA Women's National League and below the Women's Super League and Women's Championship. Colchester United Football Club is a professional association football club based in the city of Colchester, Essex, England. The team competes in , the fourth tier of the English football league system. Founded in 1937, the club spent its early years playing in the Southern Football League until they were elected to the Football League in 1950. Between 1950 and 1990, Colchester spent their time between the Third Division and Fourth Division, during which time they produced one of their most memorable results, a 3–2 victory in the fifth round of the FA Cup over Don Revie's Leeds United in 1971.
