Col. Joseph Ellis House
The Col. Joseph Ellis House is located at 1009 Sycamore Street in Haddon Heights, Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The house was built in 1760, and was the dwelling of Revolutionary War hero Colonel Joseph Ellis. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 23, 1994, for its significance in architecture and military history. Joseph Ellis House derives primary significance as the residence of Joseph Ellis (d. 1796), a political officeholder and important commander of local militia during the American Revolution. Born in Ellisburg, Gloucester (now Camden) County, Ellis married Mary, daughter of Jacob Hinchman, in 1760. The couple lived in this house. Haddon Heights is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 7,495, an increase of 22 (+0.3%) from the 2010 census enumeration of 7,473, in turn a decline of 74 (−1.0%) from the 7,547 counted in the 2000 Census. The first permanent settlement in the Haddon Heights area was established by various families from Flushing, New York. John Hinchmann purchased a 1000-acre plot from John Hugg in 1699. A "New Jersey Line" was the quota of numbered infantry regiments that the Congress of the Confederacy assigned to New Jersey at various times.
