Codfish Bowl
The Codfish Bowl is an annual NCAA Division III, Division III college ice hockey mid-season tournament. It is the oldest tournament operating at the D-III level and the second oldest extant tournament for any level of play. History In 1965 Boston State head coach Eddie Barry (ice hockey), Eddie Barry, looking for a lower-division answer to the Beanpot (ice hockey), Beanpot, founded the tournament with the help of athletic director Gus Sullivan. The series was used as a showcase for the smaller schools in college hockey and was absorbed by the program at UMass Boston Beacons, Massachusetts–Boston when the two schools merged in 1982. The tournament began before the NCAA instituted numerican divisions, but in 1973 it switched from College Division to NCAA Division II, Division II, where Boston State played. College ice hockey is played principally in the United States and Canada, though leagues exist outside North America. In the United States, competitive "college hockey" refers to ice hockey played between colleges and universities within the governance structure established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). 1977–78 NCAA Division II Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 1977–78 NCAA Division II men's ice hockey season began in November 1977 and concluded on March 18 of the following year. This was the 14th season of second-tier college ice hockey. The NCAA instituted a Division II national championship beginning with this season. Bowdoin was one of the two ECAC 2 tournament champions, however, because Bowdoin College barred its teams from participating in national tournaments at the time runner-up Merrimack was selected instead. Due to the number of independent programs and the lack of any conference tournament for western teams, the NCAA also began holding a playoff series for western teams to help determine which schools would receive bids. UMass Lowell River Hawks Men's Ice Hockey
The UMass Lowell River Hawks men's ice hockey team is the college ice hockey team that represents the University of Massachusetts Lowell. It competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Hockey East Association. The team competed at the Division II level until 1983. That year the University of Lowell was raised to D1 in hockey only and joined the newly formed Hockey East Association. Thirty years later with a name change to both the school and the team, the University of Massachusetts Lowell claimed their first Hockey East regular season title and HEA Tournament championship in 2013. The River Hawks made their first Frozen Four in 2013 as well. UMass Lowell would repeat as Hockey East champions in 2014 and then again in 2017. The Saint Anselm Hawks are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Saint Anselm College, located in Goffstown, New Hampshire, in NCAA Division II sporting competitions. The Hawks are primarily members of the Northeast-10 Conference, where 21 of their 23 sports compete.
