''For the history of the surname, see Cochrane.'' Cochran is a surname of Scottish (and most likely of Cumbric) origin. The earliest known appearance is in Dumbartonshire (14th cent). The definition is unclear, however the name may be derived from the extinct Cumbric language, which is closely related to the Welsh language. At the time of the British census of 1881, its relative frequency was highest in Renfrewshire (34.3 times the British average), followed by Wigtownshire, Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire, Buteshire, Stirlingshire, Argyll, Kirkcudbrightshire and Forfarshire. Cochran is a ghost town in Pinal County in the U.S. state of Arizona. The town was settled in 1905, in what was then the Arizona Territory. History Named after its first postmaster, John S. Cochran, Georgia
Cochran is a city in Bleckley County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 5,026. The city is the county seat of Bleckley County. Cochran is named for Judge Arthur E. Cochran and was incorporated on March 19, 1869. Judge Cochran was largely instrumental in developing this section of Georgia through his work as president of the Macon and Brunswick Railroad, now the Southern Railway (a component of Norfolk Southern Railway). Once known as Dykesboro, Cochran was settled by B. B. Dykes, who owned the site on which the town is built. The earliest settlers located here to work in the turpentine industry. Cochran is home to Bleckley County High School and Middle Georgia State University. Cochran, Texas
Cochran is an unincorporated community in Austin County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, its population was 116 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History The area of Austin County on the west bank of the Brazos River was first settled in the 1820s, but the Cochran community itself was not founded until around 1850. It was named for James Cochran, who was given a land grant near the location where Cochran currently stands today. A gin was established by William Lange and a general store was established by LT Henton when the community first began to be settled. A post office was established at Cochran in 1884 and remained in operation until 1908. It received its mail service from nearby Bellville soon after. A chapter of the Junior Red Cross was organized in 1918. It had four businesses and 25 residents in 1933. It went up to 40 in 1952 but had only two businesses. Cochran, Virginia
Cochran is an unincorporated community located in Brunswick County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. The settlement is located along a former railroad. The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad, passing through Cochran from Petersburg, Virginia to Ridgeway Junction (today Norlina, North Carolina), was completed in 1900, at which point it was merged into the Seaboard Air Line (SAL). By 1914, the population of Cochran was estimate by the railroad to be somewhere around 200. The Seaboard line (dubbed the "S-line" after later mergers) continued to operate until the 1980s, and today Cochran is along the abandoned portion of the CSX Norlina Subdivision The Norlina Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. State of North Carolina.
